Google might give you some ideas of value too.

I also use EBay auctions and Craigslist listings, particularly if there are pictures so I have an idea of the real condition of the sale item. You may want to try Craigslist postings for a number of cities to get a good base; that matches the national scope of EBay as well.

I use these two because they should be a good idea of the market value of an item (as opposed to say the intrinsic or collector's value). It's not perfect in that you might not come up with much if the item in question is rare or rarely sold and you can't find anything similar.

You might also check on line stores that sell used gear ... keeping in mind that they've added on a markup. Going to one to get a price on yours probably won't give you a good idea though. If they think you're selling, they're going to way low; if you say it's for insurance (assuming they'd give such an estimate) they're going to be above a true market value.

I suppose if you get really stuck and simply can't find anyone selling one anywhere: get several quotes from stores as if you want to sell to them. Now go to someone who will give you an appraisal. With those in hand, the true market value is likely somewhere in between.
