The easiest way to put it is that a tele twangs and a strat squawks.

A telecaster has a tighter and more bright, twangy sound.

A stratocaster is more flexible and has more tone options (and the kick stand comes in handy once in awhile). 8)

That's the tremelo bar

I love both, but find that the strat has more tones because of the three picups. Now that I have said that, you can also get many of those tones from a Tele if you know how to maneuver your fingers and amp.

It's like the difference between a saxaphone (Strat) and a trumpet (Tele).

A Tele cuts better. It's tone is bright with a strong body.

A Strat sits in the mix better (and can be lost in the mix easier). It's tone seems more complex at first, until you play a really great Tele. 8)

titanxt, I strongly suggest you get down to your local music store and hear the difference for yourself. Asking people to describe sound, and then forming an opinion on it will only confuse things for you in the future. Listen. Make up your own mind. Train yourself to hear instead of read. Music forums are awesome for so many things but, this isn't one of them. Take it from an old guy who used to spin records at 16 rpm to make the guitar riffs slower and easier to learn.

Hey guys as a player of both strats and teles, i feel that my tele is more all around than my strat. now i do understand that i have moe tonal options with my strat ( mine is a big time frankenstein) i play my faithfull all stock american tele more. it just fits a broader range of music. Dont get me wrong i love my strat, but at the end of the day it is always my tele that makes me smile

A Tele definitely has more twang and clarity and is everything you need, nothing you don't.

A Strat has more tonal options and can go from real bluesy rips in neck position to really thin and high end distortion the bridge position.

Both are versatile and are great.
