I've found that some of the ferrules on the back of my American Deluxe Tele are loose in their holes. When restringing I have to be careful that they don't fall out. It's a minor nuisance but I'm wondering - should these be tight in the body? At first I figured that the only problem was the chance of loosing one during a restring but I've also been thinking that the loose contact could dampen the string.

Any thoughts?

A loose ferrule damping the string per your situation would be non-discernible.

Loose ferules are a common problem. Using some Elmer's WHITE glue or similar, smear a little glue inside the ferrule hole in the guitar where the ferrule's cleats mate. Don't over do the glue as you don't want it to clog the string holes in either the ferrule or the guitar. Pop the ferrule back in, put the new string through it and tune as usual. Unless the ferrules are really loose, this should solve your problem. If they are indeed, really loose, take some wood shavings, place them around the inside of the ferrule hole with the glue as above and complete as above. Just like with the glue, don't over do the shavings either.

Martian's advice is probably better than what I've done in the past. I'm old skool and that means a drop of superglue. :?

However, it *did* remedy the problem with no ill effects.

The reason I choose the white over the super stuff in MANY cases on guitars is because the white can be easily undone and removed from its mating surfaces whereas the other stuff is a downright $@!&*. Using the super stuff is also kind of a mean trick to play on the next guy. For example, if a nut was super glued into the slot and the nut subsequently breaks, the poor slob who has to get this now broken nut and glue completely out of there is going to have a really tough time.
