I have a lot of Teles and to be honest, I don't really notice much difference between the two. I do mainly play a Rosewood USE Tele Deluxe though, so I guess that's my preference (without knowing why).

To me, the Maple fret board screams Tele. With that said, I think that it is personal preference though. I've heard it stated that the Maple fret board will give a brighter tone but I can't tell the difference between the Maple and Rosewood. If you like the look of Rosewood, I say go for it! YOU have to be satisfied with your purchase and not worry about what others think of your gear!

As an artist and a musician, I look for lots of color in my guitars. I'd choose rosewood over maple anyday just so it doesn't match the headstock. I just love color, must be why i like sunburst models over solid colors. I also like seing maple on vintage instruments, because it just looks right on them, but I'll always get rosewood if I have a choice.

I own a rosewood Tele and a maple Strat. Am I normal? I think that it comes down to personal taste. For me it is a work in progress. I guess that I'm looking for my own sound.

I'm about to get an American Standard Tele with a maple fretboard. I love the feel of maple.

Maple - 68 Reissue Thinline and 72 Reissue Thinline
Rosewood - 2001 Hwy 1 Tele

The AmStd Strat is also maple.

P-Bass and J-bass are both rosewood.

I like the look of maple but I've never heard all that much difference. If I've tried a bunch of what I'm looking for and a maple version works (for me) equally to a rosewood, that's what I get. But if I find a rosewood that works for me, I get that. In other words, I'd never turn down a rosewood that played better for me just to get a maple I could "live with."

1974 Tele Deluxe: maple
2000 Tele Power Deluxe: rosewood
2004 Strat 50th Anniversary Deluxe: maple
MIM Dleuxe Player's Strat: maple
2001 Texas Special: rosewood

it depends on my mood, I like 'em both.

I own two teles of the same model, one with maple and the other rosewood. Both are fine but give a different flavor. The maple resonates crystal clear while the rosewood is nice and meaty. Just depends on what would suit the style I'm aiming for.

Interesting question from the OP, one I've been thinking about for some time now. I didn't vote on the poll, purely for the reason I didn't feel I could. I have a MIA Tele Deluxe, with a maple fretboard. She is an amazing guitar to play, and to listen to. I also recently aquired a MIJ vintage 62 Tele Custom CAR, with a rosewood fretboard. She is the one hooked up as I write this, I haven't played any of my other guitars since getting her. I don't have a scooby why this is the case, I just can't stop playing her. Now bear in mind, my two gibbys both have rosewood fretboards. It's something about this particular Tele, if I ever discover what "it" is, I'll be sure to post

I voted Maple since this poll is in the Tele forum. I would vote Rosewood if it was in the Strat forum. :D

i think i can tell the difference. the maple neck has the frets set into the neck, not into a separate fingerboard that is glued on! tele's rock or blues or !!!!!

As previously said, Maple is supposed to give a brighter tone than rosewood but really, the affect on tone is so minimal that there is essentially no difference unless the sound is being measured by computer. It really comes down to looks and feel. I voted rosewood, but it really depends on therest of the guitar. I tend to like the feel of the rosewood boards but then again, I'm not that picky and nothing looks better than blonde blackguard with a maple neck (rosewood is obviously blasphemous here).
