Hey guys, long time reader; first time poster.

Great forum you have here, I've learned heaps and as of this week I tried to upgrade the pots on my 72 deluxe to 500's.

I followed the wiring diagram on the site, and it sounds beautiful, however I'm getting a lot of buzz when I'm not physically touching a string or any metal on the guitar.

I took it to a guitar tech, and he said because I'm letting in more top end, this buzz is normal.. But I kind of think that's crap seeing as how I've read countless reviews of people doing the same thing and saying how amazing the guitar is.

Did I miss something, or is there anything I can do to remove this buzz?

Shielding will help...try a search, it's been discussed several times.

Does the buzz get worse when you do touch the strings? IF so, you missed grounding somewhere.

BTW, welcome to the forum!!! 8)

Another thing you could try is an Ebtech hum eliminator :

Shouldn't the buzz get better (quieter) when you touch the strings, since then you are providing the ground?

I might have that backwards but I know this: If the guitar is poorly shielded or if you're playing it in a room with neon lights, fluorscent lights, dimmer switches, and/or computer monitors, it would buzz all the time, not just when you touch or don't touch the strings or other metal parts of the guitar, like the bridge.

I suspect you either didn't ground the guitar properly or you have a poor solder joint at one end of your ground wire.

I'm not familiar with the wiring of the Deluxe specifically but on a standard Telecaster, normal practice is to run a ground wire from the bridge to the back of the volume pot.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

The buzz goes away when touching the strings and you just get that general "hum".

I think shielding would be the best option, but ill look over all the solder joints. Also, so I solder the ground wire to the bridge, or do I just tuck it away?
