I have resurected my 75 Telecaster Custom and have been finding an issue with keeping it in tune. I have had it fixed up, intonation and all by a pretty good repair guy, but I still find I have to tune the G string after every song. It has really become unbearable. The guitar rocks when it is in tune, but about three strums into a new tune, I realize the G string has gone out of tune again. I see rockers wailing away on their Tele's, but mine seems to be way too easy to play out of tune, most especially that damn G string.

Can some one help? I need some advice.

I would bet the tuning machine is slipping.

Is the G string going sharp or flat?

If sharp, the string is binding in the nut slot and the nut slot needs to be polished to remove any burrs and possibly enlarged if it's too narrow for your G string.

If flat, it could well be a slipping tuner. That's fairly rare on even cheap guitars these days but possible with a 34 year old tuning machine.

The last guy to work on it got into the same questions about flat or sharp, and it is usually sharp. Unfortunately, he is not around now. You may be right about the nut. I will try oil on the bridge and see about the nut.

Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't waste time oiling the bridge. I'd ask the pro players in town who the best guitar tech is and have him make you a bone nut. Bring him two packs of the strings you prefer and have him do a full setup while he's at it.

The last time I had this done it cost me US$60, if that helps any.

I have the same problem on a Baja Tele. However the G string does go out of tune for the first few songs I play, after retuning for 2-3 times, it stays in tune. I think it is the bone nut, which needs a graphite lube or filing @ the G string position. This is because the string sticks in the nut.

Oh BTW, I haven't done it yet, as I just don't obsess about it, and I usually retune the flat G on the fly.

The G string is sticking in the nut. I'll try graphite. This is a 1975 Tele Custom with a Humbucking Pick up on top and a coil on the bottom. Maple Neck, Chocolate Brown body. It's a nice guitar, but frustrating when it goes out so often. If the graphite doesn't work, I'll get it off to the shop. The guy who was working on it passed away. Does anyone know a good repair shop in South Jersey/Philadelphia area?
