First of all I wanted to say thanks to all for the wealth of info available here. I'm soaking in as much knowledge as I can. Anyway, my question has to do with serial numbers and dating. I have both the Pink Paisley and Blue Flower Telecaster. Both say, "Crafted In Japan" followed by six digits. Unfortunately nothing matches. Based on the dating chart the serial number for "Crafted in Japan" should be a letter followed by five digits. "Made in Japan" should have the letter followed by six digits. It's not a big issue because I love both guitars and would never part with them. However I'm curious to know if anyone has a similar situation or owns a Japanese made guitar that doesn't match up?

Thanks for the link music4ever! The link was very helpful in determining the dating process. What was expecially interesting is that the Blue Flower Tele that I purchased this year was actually made in Corona even though it sasy "Crafted In Japan". Appraently the "T" at the beginning of my serial number stands for tribute series. Ironically when I first received the guitar it just felt and played differently. I also have a CIJ (Pink Paisley) and MIM (Strat) and while they are wonderfully made I just noticed the craftmanship on the Blue Flower seemed to be much better. Now I understand why. :D Anyway, I just wanted to thank you again for the link...

Well, that was nice of you! And you´re welcome! :)

Glad I could help! And not much of an effort needed. I did some research myself a while back and thanks to the nice people here I learned about that site...

Looks like you scored big time with that Blue Flower Tele! :)
I got my Blue Flower Tele (CIJ) a week ago, my second Tele I bought online, the first one being a 62 Tele Custom (MIJ) which I got last fall. :)

And I guess I will try to find a Pink Paisley Tele eventually... ;)

I seriously doubt that a guitar which is labelled "Crafted in Japan" will have been made in the USA. Where did you get that info from?

The issue with CIJ serial numbers is extremely simple to understand, unfortunately Fender has made it more difficult than it should be.

The CIJ serial numbers ALL have a 0 as the first digit of their serial number, so as far as Fender's description is concerned, their serial numbers are actually 5 digits, i.e. 5 numbers which are NOT zero.

Also, the T prefix is almost certainly just a follow on from the R and S prefixes.

So in all likelihood, your guitar was made in Japan, not the USA, becuase if it was made in the USA, you could be sure that it would clearly state that fact.

USA-made versions of those CBS-era Floral Telecasters are also available, but they are highly expensive. These USA Blue Flower & Pink Paisley are Custom Shop FSR creations which were originally hand-crafted by Art Esparza and Jason Davis.

This exquisite 1968 Pink Paisley re-issue (not mine) was built by Denis Galuszka. It came with a matching Pro Junior tube-valve tweed combo.

The made in USA, export to Japan guitars were from a brief period in the early 90's weren't they? Fender did do it at one point.

A friend had a lefthanded strat with Sambora inlays, that wasn't a Sambora. Bought in the USA which said Made in Japan. One of the made for export guitars. He sold the thing three times with it being returned as a fake. Despite a letter from Fender Customer Care vouchsafing the validity and origin of the instrument.
Eventually he sold it to a guy in the northeast who collects Japanese left handed strats. Who also agreed it's validity.

I've read on a Polish Sambora fan site that the original Black Paisley Strat Richie used during the "These Days" Tour features the mid-boost switch.

I believe it's a prototype built for Richie himself by senior master builder Mark Kendrick.

Richie is also a high-profile Tele fan, though I'm not sure he ever used a black paisley Telecaster. But he does playing a double-neck butterscotch blackguard for sure!

Here's the deal. I purchased a blue strat online. The research i did prior stated that serial number w p plus six should be pre 97 mij which would date it through project dater 93/94. Upon further investigation it says 99-2002. Now in blue book values it does not have the later combination, which sighs heavy on the exact value of the guitar. So I have a blue flower strat ser: p094885 w cij on back of neck.....what is the value. 98% mint

Are you also a huge fan of James Burton, perhaps?

James is associated with the Floral Telecaster since his days with rock'n'roll king Elvis Presley in the 1970s. One of his signature guitars was developed after this model.

There's even a picture of Emmylou Harris playing that guitar onstage!
