Hi,
I've just acquired my first telecaster (standard USA) s/h. I've got it home and started to get to know it. Two things I failed to detect when auditioning the guitar prior to purchase 1) Low E and A strings rattle somewhat, I've tried adjusting the height and it's still there? 2) I'm hearing phasing .. this is really bothering me! are the electrics on the way out or .or what? Before I shell out more hard earned on a pro techie I thought I'd post this in the hope that you can save me the trouble. Any advice or comments gratefully received.

Is the guitar second hand?

If it is, somebody either got a pickup with the wrong colour codes therefore creating phasing. That or it is a deliberate thing.

It can be fixed by desoldering the two wires from ONE of the pickups and installing them the other way round

And is your bridge the three or six saddle one?

Welcome!

The fact that your E and A rattle coupled by the phase problem, implies that your guitar was messed around with quite a bit. You might want to bring it to a competent tech any way as there may or may not be other problems waiting to surface.

Maybe one of the pickups at least is not the original? Or someone took them off and put back phase reversed... I would take it for a tech.

Its an easy job to just switch the wires the other way.

And a tech would think you're pretty clueless if you took it in to repair it and probably rip you off

I disagree with you completely on the tech aspect.

A real tech wouldn't rip anyone off.

Not easy to switch wires around when you don't even have a solder (like me).
