Other guitars need to be tricked out to achieve (or get close to) that Tele twang. Good Teles don't. To chicken pick on anything else is pointless.

Hi all,

The tele is not the grand ma' of all guitars (electric...) the first of all time was built by Rickenbacker... Fender was the first company to sell it as a serie guitar though...

I agree that the Tele IS the best guitar ever! You can play EVERYTHING! =)
Amazing!

I have been playing guitar the biggest part of my life and i have played the same am standard tele since i was 16. I have had and still do have niec strats, gibson hollowbodys, and have other teles. I casnt tell you what neck shape or wood or any of that about my guitars. Frankly i dont care. When i plug in the old yellar bannanna it just sings. I have never had any one pick that guitar up and not go wow. I have friends that have switched from nice gibsons, gretchsand even strats to teles becasue of that one,. I dont know why the are so great , they just are. I would know what to do if i didnt have my 96 Am Standard. God Bless Leo Fenders and Fender Telecasters

The Strat is better in my books, followed by the Les paul then the tele.

Had some $$$ to spend, went into a locally owned guitar shop in the mid 80s looking for a white electric guitar, didn't know squat about them, picked up a Charvel Strat copy, it didn't feel right. Saw this interesting looking Telecaster on a stand. When my left hand closed around the neck, I KNEW! Later I found out just how versatile this instrument is, though it's more like a Strat in Tele clothing. I love the Tele body and headstock shapes. They're elegant.

I WANT ANOTHER TELECASTER!!!!

Strats are where it's at. Telecasters are a plank of wood, a hideous shape!

These days there are many variations of Telecasters, but I'm
guessing because they sound good, play good and look good.

Well that hideous shaped guitar paved the way for your Strat, or you would not have a Strat to play and chat about. Strats are different in almost every way except for the name Fender. "You can Strat up a Tele, but you can't Tele up a Strat". Sounds like an English Lyric!

It's the executive summary of guitars -- to the point and yet covers all the bases. I've used my two SS Teles to back folk, folk-rock, classic rock, blues and Jazz. (I also hear they're great for country ... :D

- Generally, (standard) Teles have better sustain than (standard) Strats, for several reasons:
- - The strings are better anchored.
- - No vibrato.
- - More massive body.
- - Slightly larger area of the neck touching the body in the neck pocket.
- - Fewer pickups that all dampen the strings.
- While the Strat has three pickups, you can only use at most two of them, and not a bridge+neck combination. As the bridge and neck pickup are more dissimilar than any two adjacent pickups, when overlayed, bridge+neck gives a "richer" sound.
- The upper bout of the Strat serves no purpose. It's not as if the cut-out on the top side is any deeper than on a Tele, so it doesn't buy you anything.
- The side-mounted jack is less in the way on a Tele than the front-mounted one on a Strat. Also, angled plugs (including some wireless transmitters) won't work well on a Strat.
- If fingerpicking, on a Strat there is not enough pickguard to brace the thumb against, nor room to thumb tap.
- For playing in a sitting position, the Tele has a larger and more perpendicular area to rest on your knee.
- The bridge pickup is better anchored on a Tele, attached to the metal bridge plate.
- The bridge plate also means the bridge is naturally grounded.
- On a Tele, you can do pot and switch maintenance work and changes without removing the strings and pickguard.
- For vintage models, the Tele doesn't have staggered pole pieces that are staggered for a wound G string, which nobody uses these days.
- The top-most knob is perilously close to the strings on a Strat, which makes it harder to pick over the bridge pickup. (Then again, some pick users like to curl their pinkie around it.)
- The headstock is smaller on a Tele, making it less likely that you'll hit something, and an ounce or so less top-heavy.

Of course, the Strat has a couple of advantages too, like having a vibrato bar, having a middle pickup and fewer hard angles that can feel uncomfortable on a Tele.
It all boils down to personal preferences.

My personal ranking is SG > Tele > LP > Strat, but that's just my personal preference. Others have different opinions, and that's just fine!

First of all, Fender and I share one very important thing in common - we both started life the very same year.

Secondly, when I was in my late teens, I was lucky enough to get my hands on a '57 Tele, and from that day on it was a love affair that is still with me today. Yes, I have had other guitars; '66 Epiphone Coronet, a Gibson Hollow body (can't remember the model, but it was quite similar to an ES-175D), and a Fender Squire Strat. The Tele was sold to buy my first wife's engagement ring; I won't get into that.

Of all the guitars I've owned/played, there was always something very special to me about the Tele, and that's what brought me back to purchasing another one just under a year ago from many years of not playing; the Modern Player.

What so many others have said, I ditto. It's a bond really. You look at it, you hold it, you play it, and it just all comes together. It's a personal player guitar relationship that only a Tele player will understand. So for me, it's simply the best there is.

The tele is NOT "the guitar". It's one of the great guitars IMO. Others are: LP, 335, Gretsch hollow body, & Strat. In my way of thinking, all the others are a variant of these icons. Taste and musical genre will dictate which is best for you. I'm glad there are more than one.
