I think both of these guitars look beautiful, especially the Koa. Apart from the SD pickups, does anyone think the guitar underneath is just a better looking Standard, and that the price premium just goes on the looks? Over here a Mex Standard is about £350, and both of these are about £500. Regardless, if i had the cash, I'd buy the Koa. Actually, for the same money maybe it'd be the Classic Player, cos it's a bit different and more versatile. In the meantime, i'll have to make do with my Squier. Gotta keep dreaming and saving!

The differnces in the the Koa/Lite Ash vs. a standard is cosmetic, but quality wise I don't think it's a huge step up in quality. They are just using fancier woods and hardware, so the price is more. Also, the Koa/Lite Ash strats and teles are made in korea, where as the standard series and the classic player series are made in mexico. I have played a couple of the classic players and was very impressed. I know this is the tele forum, but my favorite was the classic player 50's strat in shoreline gold. It was really nice.

Maybe you should try a standard Tele. If it turns out that you don't like it, you can always either modify it or trade in. Fenders hold their value fairly well.

I love the Natural Lite Ash look. I believe that is the classic Tele look.

I have several Teles including a natural finish Lite Ash. It is an excellent guitar. The pups are good but I did put a SD Jerry Donohue in the bridge to get a little more high end out of it but the stock pups are good as well. Mine is several years old and has held up well. I have two American made Teles that are also very nice. I think of of the Lite Ash as kind of a blackguard style with a modern (9.5") radius which I prefer. To my mind the Lite Ash is much better than the standard Mexican Tele but I have not tried to compare to a 50s or 60s classic which are a little higher end but have the 7.25" radius fretboard so they are not what I am looking for. I think the Koa guitar is a laminate on top of basswood so I would avoid it. I have heard that the pups are not anything special and that it has a muddier sound.

Just a quick note to the OP:

Marge, the Lite Ash Tele is widely available in the UK for around £350, so you don't need to save quite so much before you start living your dream. Run a quick search on Google. For example:

http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product.asp?id=5096

So happens I have bought guitars sight-unseen from SoundsLive and had very nice and efficient service, so I think you'd be OK there. Though of course, going that route you have to take pot-luck over what the grain is like on the timber you end up with. I also notice that SoundsLive have an ex-demo Lite Ash Tele for £319...

Personally, I think the Lite Ash instruments are a knock-down bargain. Very good pups at the price, abalone dot markers and every neck I've seen has had a good quality birdseye used on the fingerboard. My only reservation is the cheap pickguard - which is easily switched for a 3-ply.

Good luck! - C

Great Pups, and a nice light body. I'd take that any day!
