I would say that a Pro Jr. should be able to suite your needs for many musical styles. They are both simple and effective and they take pedals extremely well. They also can be reasonably loud.

Super Champ XD is also a good choice. Has some built in voices .... some very good, some so-so, and built in Reverb, Chorus etc. You can play a lot of styles of music with an SCXD. They are under $300 these days at GC & Musicians Fried.

If you are going to be in a band with a drummer, I would be looking for at least 40 watts of power from my amp. One 12" speaker minimum. It would be a shame to get too little amp and have to sell it and start over.

+1

I use my PJ in a band situation all the time, and it works fine. That being said, our jam space has a PA system in it so I do mic it, but I don't really know if it's necessary. If your drummer isn't John Bonham, and you can get the amp off the floor, I think that 15 watts is enough.

More importantly, the PJ is great for gigs where your amp will be mic'd. It's light, it's simple, and it sounds really, really good.

I have a Blues Jr. NOS and a Hot rod Deluxe. I love them both. The Hot rod is great if you have a drummer, more than enough volume to cut through. The Blues Jr. sounds awesome and is small and portable, even in a road case.

+1. For around $400, a nice tube amp is in your price range. I'd also take a look at the Blackheart amps. They are tube amps also for a very reasonable price.

This picker recommends:

Sniff around for a used, functional Cyber-Twin. They are amazing and the "thrill" sems to have worn off and used ones are around. 'Bought a used 2001 about 4 1/2 years ago and it is a sweetie.
