:?: Does anyone else on the forum prefer vintage size frets on there tele. I guess it just boils down to personal preference but I have came to the conclusion that I like 6105 fretwire on strats and Vintage frets on teles. Both with 7.25 radii.:? I was just curious as to what fret size and radii my fellow tele players prefer?

Wondering what size necks (nut width) are on the pre-2006 MIM Teles? They made alot before the 2006 changes.

I believe they are the same size nut-wise.

Never played a 7.25" neck with 6105 frets. Only in 9.5" radiuses. Fret wise I don't feel that much difference, but I prefer the 7.25" board than the 9.5".

I played with vintage frets for many years and it took a little while for me to get comfortable with the medium jumbo (speedbumps), but now I feel comfortable with either size and radii.

I don't particularly like the vintage frets. My preference is, oddly enough, jumbo Gibson-style fretwire. That might have to do with my choice of heavy strings: bigger frets seem to take them better.

Cappy,

My first axe w/ vintage frets is in transit, so I'll have to reserve judgement. Who's got the MIM frets before the 2006 models (except RI)?

I have Vintage frets on my '72 thinline tele. I actually prefer the feel of the medium jumbos that are on my Strats.....but I can play eather. Also......If I need my frets dressed.........the medium jumbos can take it better and have more metal to lose.

I have vintage-style frets on both of my strats and on my tele. I don't see the advantage of larger frets. I just don't get it. My fingers are strong enough to bend the strings. It doesn't take any extra effort to bend the strings with vintage frets, IMO. On the other hand with higher frets, you can more easily push the strings a little sharp if you bear down on a note.

By the same token, I don't get guitars with unfinished or satin finished necks. It's just a cost cutting measure that manufacturers have turned around and fooled the public into believing the neck is somehow "faster".

I have vintage frets on my Telecaster and modern medium jumbos on the Stratocaster. They're both fine with me. I string the Telecaster with the same string gauges used by James Burton

.009 .010 .012 .024 .032 .038

The vintage frets seem to go well with these very light strings. By the way, the gauges used here make it much easier to bend the B and G strings. It's also easier to do a behind the nut bend. Ideal for Bakersfield sound country music like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens.

I tend to like bigger fret wire but do like the feel of low vintage frets for swing blues chording. Very slick and comfy for those quick slide and chord changes!
