What I really want to know, is how is the telecaster for fingerstyle compared to a stratocaster. I'm learning fingerstyle commonly reserved for nylon and steel string acoustics, but I'm finding my MIA strat's strings a bit too close together. Is the telecaster any different, or is there a better solid body electric for this style of playing?

On a side note, I do know that Mark Knopfler plays his stratocaster fingerstyle and has no dfficulty - I am prepared to admit my technique needs a great deal of work....

The American Stratocasters and Telecasters have a significantly closer string spacing than what Strats and Teles had in decades past. They are more like a Gibson nowadays. To use your example, Knopfler's string spacing is much further apart than on your Strat as he, having ancient Strats, has the wider spaced bridges which naturally, are of the original design. You'd either have to get one of the American Vintage or American signature models of a Strat or the MIM Deluxe Players Strat for the original, wider string spacing. With the Teles, essentially you'd have to get an American Vintage type or certain signature models as well. Oftentimes, the tip-off to what is probably the wider bridge with the American Teles is the 3 barrel bridge design.

A word of caution: Don't be confused by MIM copies of American Fenders. They "shrunk" what appears to be the original design bridges down to the spacing of like, your Strat. In terms of the Strat, as I've said above, the only MIM one which has the 'full sized' bridge is the Deluxe Player. With Teles, to the best of my knowledge, there is no MIM with a full sized, original spaced bridge.

This is the wider spacing I'm referring to.

Classical acoustics have a huge distance between strings if compared to any average Fender electric guitar.

Just get used. Will take some time but.. well, you will be playing a Tele 8)

I'm just starting to try fingerstyle on my tele (72 thinline RI) and I'm finding it works just fine. Obviously its tighter than an acoustic, but it just takes getting used to it and your brain will make the transition.

If you were at all serious about fingerstyle you would have 1926 hauser design perfectly executed for 10,000 the finger nails on your right hand be long come to a point slightly ascew twords the thumb and the underside would be polished to a miror finish. And at that point the tele would just eat through your nails. So no its not good to play fingersyle on any steel string instrument but if you dont take it seriously then your fine.

I have no troubles fingerpicking with my Nashville Tele. The string spacing is (I think) the widest available on a Mexican Tele, which is why I love it so much.
