Folks, I know there have been many posts about pickups, but I want to find a set that will help my 2008 American Standard Tele sound like a classic '59 (something like Jim Campilongo's) with lots of low-end growl. Anybody have any recommendations? Sound files/samples would be nice. Thanks, Tele fans.

Jim's bridge pickup was rewound by Seymour Duncan at some point...but I think that any good chimey Tele pickup in the 60's tradition must do the job.

One tip to the growl is that he turns all the tone knobs on his Princeton Reverb to 10, and lots of volume too. Also, his guitar is a top-loader. Jim says in his website that the strings feel more rubbery.. maybe a bit more towards an Eb tuning, I imagine, so that's another thing that's adding to the bassy factor.

Fender's CS is about ready to release a JC Model Tele. I asked in the "Mike Eldred" forum area and he said "soon."

True. I have some pictures of the prototype they gave to Jim. But being a Custom Shop, I bet it will cost over 3 grand though

Try Duncan's Broadcaster or DiMarzio's Pre B-1. Both of their sites have sound clips.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I'll try playing around with the tone controls, and dropping to Eb, to see if I can come any closer, but I figure the pickups have a lot to do with it. His sound hotter than stock, for sure. He sure gets a "nasty" sound out of that Tele of his. Love it.

I was re-watching the video of his presentation in the last NAMM, and his tone to me is pretty much a little "nastier" Bakersfield tone. Much of it has more to do with the way he plays and attacks the strings than pickups.

Some pictures of his prototype:

These pictures were posted by Jim himself in a topic at the TDPRI.
Notice the cut-off upper bridge lip, so Jim's pick doesn't miss the low E string.
