I have had my '52 RI for a day now and have had 3 good practice sessions. I plan to do a couple more hours tonight before turning in for the night. I am still in the getting acquainted phase and trying to hear the different sounds I can get. When I put the selector switch toward the neck I get a nice rich dark tone, but it doesn't seem to be putting out much juice. That may not be a problem because I am playing through a practice amp right now and I am thinking an amp with some balls will give me planty volume and still stay clean. I am really just noting that there is plenty of difference between the juice the neck pickup puts out and that of the bridge pickup. It may even be an advantage. Now, the switch in the center, here is where I really know I am playing a tele. I am finding this position perfect for bass line riffs and double stops. I know Muddy Waters and Albert Collins played teles, but I am surpried I don't see more blues players use one. Its a great blues guitar. When I put the switch to the rear I am surprised to find it is to my ears better for chords than single notes.

This leads me to a question about my understanding of the switch positions of the '52. I had thought foward postition toward the neck was neck pickup with tone control, middle position is bridge pickup with tone control, and rear position is rear pickup raw with no tone control. But, with my guitar this is not the case. The tone control is obviously doing something when in rear postition. But, what?

The "forward" position, i.e. towards the nut, is neck pickup with a permanent tone cap. See this http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdf_temp1/telecaster/0100202C/SD0100202CPg4.pdf.

Neck with tone pot is actually the middle position.

That explains alot. I had it reversed in my mind. Funny thing, I had not played yet with the tone control in the forward position. That would have really confused me. If I don't ask I don't learn. Thanks.
