I've restored my '66 with SCN Noiseless pickups. The neck pickup sounds great, but when I switch to the bridge I can hear things touching the guitar. It's almost like I've somehow turned the guitar into a pickup :(
I imagine that it's a grounding problem. There are 3 wires coming off the bridge pickup; one goes to a pot on the control panel, one goes between the pickup and the bridge plate, and one grounds to the bridge plate (I THINK). Somewhere I must have gone wrong, but where? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have the same problems with my '52RI. it has those too. I'm just going to pop the original back pickup in (the SCNs were installed before my ownership of it)

Try re-checking the wire connection joints on the ground. Sounds like a broken ground loop.

Well, since this is not a Deluxe Tele, might you know where to ground the 3 grounding wires from the bridge pickup to?

I can hear things touching the guitar

You need to better define this before rushing around, changing wiring, pickups. possibly making a mess of things and wasting time and dollars.

Do you mean you get a buzzing, humming or background noise that either stops or starts when you touch the guitar? If it's excessive, it ^may^ be grounding. Maybe not. Remember, these are not humbuckers so you're going to get background noise. It's part of the 'charm' of the tele's and strats.

If the pickup is picking up noise, sound, taps, it may be microphonic. I'll leave it to you lo look that up, but if you can get it wax potted, that can do wonders.

Take this guitar and play it in at least two separate physical locations with at least two separate amps as part of your troubleshooting process. And use a different connecting cable too! Fixed a buddy's flat sounding bad high frequency response sound one time by knotting up his cheap piece of crap cord and throwing it in the trash.

Remember, an hour of investigation and research will save you ten hours of work later on.

Coming from the pickup itself, you should have three wires: Yellow, green and black. The yellow wire is your hot wire which goes to the pickup selector switch. The green and black wires are to be grounded to the back of the volume pot.

When I touch the metal or body, you can hear my movements through amp. I know where the wires go, but for the grounding, there's three wires off the bridge pup. One goes to the volume, one goes between the pup and plate and one grounds to the plate.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but in total, you should only have three wires coming out of the pickup. Namely, the yellow, the green and the black.

If I'm interpreting what you are saying correctly and again, please correct me if I'm wrong, you say that you have a wire leading out of the pickup to the bridge plate and then one coming from the bridge plate as a ground and yet another which goes to the volume pot as a ground?

There is one ground wire that has a ground lug on it and two other ground wires off of that. One is long enough to get to the control panel.

OK, so obviously, they are all one ground.

Let's do a check: With the exception of the yellow wire going to the pickup selector switch and NO where else, are ALL the other wires and their 'branches' sent to a ground and NO where else?

Well, the green and blacks are sent to the back of the volume, and the lug off of the bridge is put between the plate and pup and the short black wire is grounded to the plate.

OK, then you have continuity with all the grounds.

Sidestepping the fact that your hand movements on the guitar are picking up, does the output of the bridge pickup appear to be normal?

Yes, the output is normal.
