Changed it to the ''modern wiring''.

I havent made the change yet. But it will happen soon.

The other option is get a 4 way switch to get both. The third option is to get a 5 way switch to get the series tone as well.

Understand why I havent made the change yetÉ

That's exactly what I'm going to do. I love the two-pickup sound but I don't want to sacrifice anything to get it. I'm surprised more people don't go for this option.

Who ever does it first should do a review of it

I'm not sure what you mean by a review in this case. If you already know what the two wiring schemes sound like, the four-position should give you exactly the same sounds. You will just have access to all of them via one switch.

I've been studying this for a few days and I've come to the conclusion that the 4-way wiring that I mentioned above is not possible with the 4-way Fender switch, unless I'm missing some really clever trick. The Fender 4-way switch is a 2P4T switch. What's needed is a switch similar to the Strat 5-way switch in which the switch wiper shorts adjacent sets of contacts in certain positions. Anyone know of a 4-position switch like this?

Nope. I've convinced myself that it's not possible with a 4-way switch. Unless someone makes a special switch, similar in design to a strat 5-way, I think you are out of luck.

I have two, a 2005 that I switched and a 2011 that I left original. That probably does not help your decision...
