I have a Mexican Standard from 2008, and I want some clearer pickups. I'd like to still keep the bridge a single coil, but I'm not sure if I want to make the neck pickup a humbucker. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Clearer? You mean less humm? You could try a humbucker, or one of the many mini-humbuckers out there.

Not sure about what you mean when you say Clearer, the pups on most MIM are not really that bad. What to replace them with really depends on what kind of music you play.

I play alternative rock. I just want some pickups that sound really nice clean and with some overdrive on them. Any specific recommendations? Thanks.

If you like HBs, I really like the active EMGs on my JR.

You might check out the seymour duncan stacked HB's if it's a noise issue There website has some sound bites. Go to Harmony Central and check out reviews on many types of pickups. If it's a cheap price your after GFS makes some nice ones. But remember your amp is as much of a part of the sound your looking for as the pickups so I would pack your guitar to a store with a good variety and play'um all before I started changing pickups. You may need to change both to get want you want.

The never ending quest for tone....where does it start and does it ever end?

Most MIM Tele’s are already routed for a humbucker in the neck position; that opens up more possibilities. You could go the way of a ’52 Hot Rod and put a Seymour Duncan SM3 in there or any mini HB for that matter. As far a bridge pickup goes a matching stacked HB could easily be dropped in as well. I already have a ‘52 Hot Rod and wanted something different for my MIM Tele and went with a complete kit from Texas Customs. www.texascustoms.us They have sound clips that you could sample and determine if this is for you. Anyhow, here’s what I ended up with:

Thanks Idahored,

The tone is awesome as well. Nice and twangy in the bridge and fat smooth crunch in the neck.

Play on!

Dmeds, your Tele looks GREAT.

clearer, maybe you mean, clean, sparkly?

Check out Duncan's 54 STL-1. Goes nicely with overdrive, crispy and bright. And reasonably priced.

I never tried a neck humbucker in a Tele, but people speak quite well of Duncan's Seth Lover model and the Antiquity, as well as their mini-humbucker. Also Fralins and Lollars are very well recommended.

Thanks Lago,

You're right, clean & sparkly is much more accurate. I have a '52 Hot Rod Tele RI which comes with the SD mini-hum (SM-1). That's what inspired me to try this out with this Tele. Mini-hums seem to work well with Teles since they're not as heavy as a full HB; preserving the Tele tone & character.

Play On!

I was in the same boat as you cos the neck pup on my tele i always found to be quite weak so this morning i ordered me some tonerider vintage plus pickups - on the orange forum people are going crazy over them really good sound and really good value for money, ill try and get a sound clip when they are in but you could just as easy check out their site

- they are apparantly really quiet (little or no hum) too which is a plus :)
