Hey guys

I have this problem with my telecaster. its a 68 re-issue paisley pink CIJ

when i crank the gain in my amp past 12 it lets off this unbearable squeal

it doesnt happen with my strat so i know its not the amp but i've heard of this happening to most tele's in a rory gallagher interview and he said he ripped off the brass plate under the pickup and stuffed the cavity full of petroleum jelly and problem gone!!

thing is im not sure if thats the best course of action for me and my tele

has this happened to any of you guys here and what were the measures you took to fix this problem

My '67 Tele has always been a squealer, particulary on the bridge pickup. One of the reasons I tend to prefer strats. I'm sure there are things that can be done but I've never felt like modding it.

The squeal is called feedback and is usually caused by the pick up(s) or microphones being too close to the output speaker (amp).
The higher the gain on the amplifier, the larger the feedback field.
Same as walking in front of PA speakers with a live microphone.

Yeah, but there is good feedback and bad feedback. What we refer to as squeal is the bad feedback. Good feedback (when you want it at least) is caused by sympathetic vibration of the strings by the speakers. Bad feedback is squeal that comes from the pickups without the strings being involved.l

So fix it. Vaseline in the pickup cavity? Puh-leeeze.

Google is our friend. Try a search like "microphonic guitar pickups".

Or go to the Stew-Mac catalog for all that's needed to 'pot' your pickups.

You get it on the tele and not the strat. It may also be due to the different pickups you have on strat and tele. The feedback you seem to be getting can be that the gain is too high for the tele, turn down the gain on the amp and see if the feedback still continues keeping the volume at 12. I am curious, what kind of amp are you using and isn't 12 just a tad too high unless your playing stadiums? If you are, you best get yourself a new guitar tech, cause the one you have ain't doing his job!
