I have a MIA Standard 09 so it's got the ones like Strats do . I'm wanting a 52 hot rod. What's the differance between compensated and non-compensated?

The 52 has a three saddle bridge, so two strings share one saddle therefore limiting the adjustability of the intonation usually splitting the difference between the two strings or favoring one. On a compensated bridge each saddle is offset from one side to the other. there are a couple of variations one type has the adjusting screw at an angle thru the saddle. Do a search on ebay and you will find some pic's that show this. Wilkinson makes some of the more popular ones. I have two. Other parts makers have there own variations along with some custom designed type like Danny Gatton, There also some technics on tuning a standard bridge. One article I've read is called Saddle Up you Telecaster. I think you can find it at seymour duncan.com It's been on this forum before too. Hope that helps

Good description.

They compensate for the intonation limitations of a 3 saddle bridge design by offswtting the point the string leaves the saddle.

I have the Wilkinson ones on my 72 custom, and according to my tuner, the intonation is fine (and they sound good).

intonation is the length of the string between the nut and the saddle. if it is not correctly udjusted the string will not be in tune when fretted up the neck.

One check is to compare the harmonic at the 12 th fret versus the fretted note

ah thanks guys.

If i were to buy a wilkinson style bridge for my mim tele. How would i go about setting up all this stuff? Surely if i just stuck it straight onto the guitar it would play horribly? Or am i best taking it to a pro to get it done?

Also do the wilkinsons play and feel like a fender bridge?

If you have an MIM standard Tele, you will have a modern 6 saddle bridge which will have 6 saddles and won't suffer any intonation compromises. The intonation from the factory set up should be pretty much correct.

If you have a vintage re-issue Tele, you will most likely have a 3 saddle bridge design where compensated saddles could benefit you (I should add that plenty of people are happy with normal saddles and although there is a certain amount of intonation compromise with them, it's really not noticable to the average joe. If you feel that your guitar is as in tune on the 15th fret as it is on the 1st fret, then leave well alone and save some money)

Yes, the Wilkys play and feel like normal saddles (and look pretty much the same at a glance)

I'd take it all with a pinch of salt and rock out!
