For those of you who don't know, info about them here:

http://www.squierguitars.com/products/s ... 0310203550

The story... My new job has travel and I thought I'd hit the pawnshops for some inexpensive 'something'' with strings. Just wanted something I could carry along when I was on a driving trip so if it got chipped, scratched or stolen I wouldn't be crying in my beer.

Went by my favorite dealer and saw this in the corner new with a $175 sticker. Could have done better at a pawn shop, but not by much and tele's don't show very often.

Played it and it felt *nice*. Started looking at it closer. Fit is pretty good. Finish is, well a little thick. The body is very butterscotchy and the neck is very pale. The sales guy asked me what I thought and I told him that it reminded me of a girl that's spent a lot of time at the beach and has a beautiful golden tan and then she takes her bikini top off.

Neck set up, good. Frets good with just a couple of small edges here and there, nothing to rip you hand on.

Hardware is pretty good, not spectacular. Pickups sounded so-so but it was in a store so for politeness sake I really couldn't crank it any.

Sales guy gave me a much better deal for cash so out the door it went.

Once home, I pulled the pick guard and the work inside is immaculate. Good routing and soldering is better than I've seen on any guitar lately.

On my best days I'm a poor to mediocre player so I had my son run it through it's paces...he was very impressed.

This one is worth a lot more than the $$ I have invested. Is this indicative of how the rest of the Squier line is? I am pleasantly surprised.

(I'm still not buying a 'Hello Kitty' one though!)

Squier quality has come a long way recently. The Classic Vibe series are in my opinion hands down the best value for the money anywhere. I haven't looked closely at the Affinity series lately but it sounds like you have a nice one. Lets see some pics. :D

I saw one of those at a pawn shop a couple of months back and they wanted 100 bucks MORE than a new one!

I'll have to figure out how to post pictures here. But seriously, the website link I included has a not-too-bad image.

Yeah, it's a not even MIA or MIM, but I'm more than surprised at the quality. Especially at the price. The store, they know me there, I bought a Baja tele and my son got an Epiphone Casino, neither high dollar items, but still. So I walked out the door $150 lighter which would have been a pawn shop price for something equivalent. Squier strats are running about $125 usually. And they always need something done to them for repair.

So I'm shocked/surprised. Is this indicative of the quality of the rest of the line? I'll have to check it out sometime.

What's interesting is, I've played it very little in the three months I've had it. First I've had two long trips, but they were flying me and I wouldn't trust the baggage handlers with a two by four packed in an armored case, let alone any guitar. And also, my son has been stealing it all the time more for his church band, so it is rarely in the stand I bought for it in the bedroom.

I don't care if it's cheap. I'm going to upgrade the crappy disc capacitors and shield the pick guard cavities later on when I get it back.

it's misleading that they call it an affinity series because it's hands down way much better. The ones I've seen in a store have had a very good attention to detail and they are beautiful. A little tint on the neck would make it a knockout. It would be simple to upgrade the bridge and make it string thru the body, a small drill press would be the only special tool needed. My wife won't let me get one until I finish the 2 project teles I've been collecting parts for the last 2 years. They just don't understand!!!

You just gave me one of those Homer Simpson forehead slapping moments.

"D'oh!!"

I was going to do the shielding and electronics upgrade, but it never occurred to me to mess with the bridge till you mentioned it.

For me, punching through the body and going to say, a old school brass bridge would be no problem. Something else to practice my 'madd luthierz guitarz skillz'. Will be fun.

Now, off to the Stew Mac website to check prices.

Give it a good shielding and you might like it even better!
