How straight is your neck? It may need a truss rod adjustment.

Have there been any sudden changes recently? It sounds like either the bridge dropped or the neck moved. Is the neck loose by any chance?

the neck is definitely not loose, however, i have adjusted the truss rod, and it hasn't made any difference at all...

I'm grasping at straws here, but is it possible that the nut was not fully seated when the guitar was made then it suddenly sunk to it's normal position?

Off the wall question: What gauge strings are you using?

You need a new nut. When the bridge is set too low the strings hit frets further up the neck, away from a correct set nut. If the trussrod was the problem it would be frets 5-9 hitting the strings depending on how bad it is.
Theres an outside chance that theheadstock end of the guitar could be broken but you'd have seen that.

This seems the most likely problem, assuming the strings are ONLY hitting the first fret. Find the best guitar tech in town and have a bone nut installed along with a full setup on the guitar.

hi guys i got a similar problem was wondering if u cud help.

i have a 3 week old 2009 mim. when i bought it i swear there was very little if any buzz, however over last couple of days its started to get really bad.

Currently on the low E string it buzzs right to the 17th fret (yes all the way from the 1st to the 17th!) on the A string to the 15th fret, on the D string to the 13th fret, on the G string to the 10th fret, the B string to the 10th fret, and the High E to the 12th fret. With the high E if played on the 1st fret u cant even hear a note its so bad.

Its really weird iv had dead frets, but never like this, and weird how its got progressively worse...

Any suggestions?

I'm guessing the guitar readjusted to the humidity levels in your home. When I bought my Jazzmaster, the setup at the store was perfect. After being in my house for a couple of days it went nuts.

Right - you really need to get familiar with some basic set up procedures like neck relief, saddle and pickup height adjustments, etc. There are some really nice books at Stewart MacDonald by Dan Ertilwine.
