Can you make out a serial number anywhere?

I could not find any other numbers so I removed the neck and there is a stamp of may 5, 1962 on the end of the neck. Thank you for your reply and God Bless.

Hi Bodie,

The 1962 Telecasters had the S/N stamped onto the neckplate.

The stamps on the bottom of the necks do not indicate the day, the first number is not a day, rather it is a code to identify the type of neck.

If your code read something like this: 5 MAY 62 B the 5 indicates the neck type, MAY is indeed the month, and 62 is the year, B is a code for the width of the neck (A, B, or C)

Unfortunately the "5" corresponds to the neck for a Precision Bass. Telecaster should be a 3

Here is a link to a good explaination of the neck codes

http://zeus.lunarpages.com/~jimshi2/neckstamps/fender_neck_codes_1962.htm

At any rate, here is a link to some more information on identifying a 61/62 Tele, maybe it will be of use to you.

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/62tele.html

Some pics of your tele would be great :D

Agreed. If it really is a '62 I want to see it.

You can use a photo sharing website like Photobucket. It is a free site. You just upload your images and then copy paste the "" code tag into a post here.

Umm, well that wont work Bodie. Once you have added the photo to photobucket, there should be a small box near the lower left of the photo with 3 or for lines of code, choose the one the starts ands ends with : and post that one.

If this is still confusing, you can right click on any photo posted on these forums and select properties. You will be able to see the format of the code from there.[

Man I thought you said this tele was pretty beat up! :) It looks good, if it is a 62'

I cant make out the neck stamp very well on that first photo. I cant tell if that is a 3 or a 5. It should be a 3 which corresponds to a telecaster neck.

It looks as though it could be a 3. As you may have read from those other links, there are many telltale signs that can help authenticate your tele. You'd have to pretty much disassemble the guitar to verify all of them. If you dont feel comfortable doing that, maybe you could take it to a guitar tech and have them help....just dont go selling it to him for 50 bucks cause he blithely remarks that it is a fake and you should rid yourself of it immediately!! :D

I took a closer look and the tail on the number three is gone and it makes it look like a five. The body looks like it could have been changed since it looks like they originaly drilled holes for the strings through the body in the wrong place. I will send you some more pictures of the body. The neck looks like they tried to put a coat of clear over it. It still plays pretty good. The neck plate has six screw holes instead of four and there is no serial numbers stamped on it like on my Fender Musicmaster; it has a serial number of -21985.
What do I look for when I take the rest of the body apart?

Well, there should be a date for the body under the neck pickup for one, usually written in pencil. The neck plate has definitely been changed which means the body may indeed be a replacement.

Here is a reference site that gives some very good details about vintage telecasters and strats. They also provide some really nice pictures!

http://www.provide.net/~cfh/fender.html

Just scroll down that page (it is a long one) and you will find MANY things to look for if you decide to tear that telecaster down for closer inspection.

That is about the extent of my meager knowledge of vintage telecasters.

I hope you find something useful.
