I was playing with a band and the other guitar player was playing a strat thru a peavey amp (not sure which model) and his guitar sounded so much thicker than my 52 tele RI and marshall valvestate VS100R. My tele sounded paper thin compared to his even when I had my tone rolled back and on my thickest pickup.

Any way to thicken the sound of it to make it a reliable rythym guitar by doing something to the guitar or purchaseing an amp that better suits the tele? What amp should I get?

Neck humbucker would fatten it up.

A Fender Bassman would make that Tele sound fat, also I love the sound of the soap bars in my JA-90. Significantly more fat than my old 52 re-issue.

First thing you should have tried would be to plug your Tele into your friends amp - this would ascertain if it is the guitar or amp that you are not satisfied with. Marshall valve states are pretty crappy! (sorry!)
The Peavey Classic range tube amps a known for there good sound (if that's what it is...) There were some terrible solid state Peavey amps around a few years back.

In my experience strats can have pleasing heavy bass sound, but they lack the mids required to cut through a band mix.

Of course it's horses for cousres, but I've never found my Tele too weedy, and favour it over my Strat for it's ballsy sound. (I use a 15 watt blues junior)

Try your buddies amp and see what happens...

I believe it's the amp. Try a tube amp that should thicken your sound.

sounds good and thanks for the replies. I will try my buddies amp and I will consider replacing my marshalll eventually if that is the case.

Don't forget strings also. Just going up one size can make quite a difference to the "thickness" of the tone.

Get the '57 Deluxe RI. A marriage made in heaven.

Solid state amps and Teles are a bad combination.

I've always found too that the bridge pickup in those Teles were horribly anemic. Before you start going for the throat in terms of switching amps and guitars and all the money and oftentimes, aggravation involved, simply replace your bridge pickup with a beefier after market pickup. There are MANY out there tailored to your specific needs and are direct replacements. Visit the DiMarzio and Duncan websites. They both even have sound bytes of what most of their pickups sound like.

Best Tele pickups out there are Fred Stuart Blackguards. But a Valvestate is a horrible amp for a Tele. You can build your own '57 RI Deluxe for about $600.
