It will give you a more pronounced bite or growl (think - gritty?)

For approximately 1967 and earlier, the standard tele wiring allowed each of the two pickups to selected individually. The bridge pickup is selected when the switch is in the rear position. The neck pickup is selected when the switch is in the middle position. With the switch in the forward position, the neck pickup is also selected, however a capacitor is also switched in which rolls off all the highs and provides a smooth bassy tone.

With the modern wiring, the smooth bassy tone of the switch in the forward position is forfeited. Instead this position is used to select the neck pickup (without the rolloff capacitor) and the middle position is used to select both pickups together. This gives a nice tone sort of similar to a humbucker tone.

On my '67 tele, I've kept the original wiring because I really like the smooth bassy tone. To get the two pickup sound, I carefully put the switch in between the middle/rear detents. It's not ideal because it takes a few seconds to do this, but I'm willing to live with that.
