hi
just got a brand new MIM Tele, issue is 1st string breaking at the same fret area when doing whole note bends, i'm upset cause i asked the dealer to do a full check and set up as the guitar is now out of the country and there are not dealers to take it back to.......sigh

anyway i've look at the suspected frets and dont see anything that would be cutting the string, i've taken a 400 grit sand paper to the area frets and that didn't do anything, i'm really bummed as i only purchased 3 sets of new strings including the original set on the tele and now i have no 1st's strings and of course they dont sell strings where i live and it will be WEEKS till i get new strings mailed to me.

any other ideas other than a burr i'd like to hear your coments, and should the fret be flat where the string has contact or more rounded?

cheers

The nut slot might need a little filing. I've seen this a few times.

hi standish,

You aren't giving us much in the way of details. You may as well...face it with no strings, you've got nothing better to do!

Where are you that they don't have guitar strings?

Where exactly is your little e string breaking? (10th fret, etc.) ?

What guage is your e string? .09 ? .10?

I bend the heck out of my strings and never break any. You don't have real acidic hands do you? I have a pretty neutral PH, but I was in a band with a guy that could rust up a set of stings in very short order.

Without more info, it's hard to make a call.
1. Is the string breaking on or near the fret?
2. Or is breaking at the nut, or bridge?

hello guys and thanks for the imput and further queires,

i'm not sure what else to tell ya, it's as simple as this,

string is breaking when i do a bend at the 10th fret every time same place,

good point about ph vs acid hands which i do have, but the string is only on a day or so, so that doesn't matter,

like i said i used some 400grit on the fret edges to smooth things out to no avail, i can tell you i do dig into them strings when i bend and i have notice d the frets loosing some of their metal surface, isl this not normal?

further comments apprecaited

stan

It's normal to "dig in" as you've mentioned, but I still say check the nut slots. I've seen this happen to several guitars. Good luck!

thnks miami for the thought, however can you tell me how the nut slot would have the effect of cutting the string at the 10th fret each time i do a whole note bend, i could understand if the string was breaking at the nut or close to it buts thats not the case string is cut same place each time, look foward to any thing else you'd have to say on the problem i'm having

The first string (high E) is very light and tension affects the string from the tuning key down through the string tree, past the nut and on...

If the nut has a sharp edge in a groove, it could be just enough to cause the break even though it's further down. I've seen players almost go insane before finding that a little filing of the nut resolves the problem.

Just sayin'....worth lookin' at.

got some sand paper and went to town polishing the frets, i taped the entire neck just leaving the frets exposed then i could level sand 4 or more frets at a time, started with 1200 grit, getting out any areas i saw as rough or burred, then moved on to 1800 then 2000 then 2200 then finished with 2500, i now have the shiniest baby bottom frets i've seen.

the neck is so fast and light to touch now its amazing...............................

this job took a few hours, well worth the effort,

i can advise anyone to do if they want a effortless playing neck

thanks again for all the help

cheers

Good that you figured it out. The 400 grit was to coarse to polish a burr out. It's a good starting point level sanding is also very important but I would use a larger block so you make sure you match up all the frets. 4 doesn't let you overlap much as you move along the fretboard. you can get a block to do the complete neck at once from a luthier supply. Keep up the tinkering. there is a need for set-up techs and practice is hard to get. Plus not only will you have a great guitar it will be your resume.

I don't mean to make light of your situation and I'm glad that you got the problem resolved ........... but where are you that you can get all of those grades of sandpaper but you can't buy guitar strings ???? :D

i live in the Caribbean, so lots of boats need sand paper

anyway my problem is that the fret wires have machine markings on both sided that are acting like burrs and catching the strings or cause frictions
i've seen other fender frets and none have these markings,

i'll email fender and see what load of crap they'll dish out on this story

i'd post pics if i knew how
