Hey everyone,

My buddy wants to put a humbucker in a Mexican Standard Telecaster once he buys it later in the year. He can get the bridge and pickup to fit, but he doesn't know if the Tele can house a humbucker without needing any extra routing.

So...

Is the Fender Mexican Standard Telecaster able to house a Gibson-style humbucker, like the 500T or '57 Classic, without needing any routing?

Pics would be great! :)

Thanks!

I am pretty sure he is going to have to do some routing. The mexican tele's have SS routing. But the Am STd. tele's have HSH routing....

EDIT***
Actually, after looking into it a bit further, I see that the newest model MIM Standard Tele bodies have HS routing, so if your friend has a new model tele then the body should accept a humbucker.

My '05 MIM Tele has the HS route; only had to route the pickguard. Take a look!

Thanks for the feedback!

I myself have a Fender MIM Tele, and after removing the pickguard to cover it with tape (it was giving me a lot of static when I anchored) I noticed that it could support a humbucker. Unfortunately, my friend would be putting the humbucker in the bridge position.

The wonderful photo from faizal82 confirms my fears however; the Telecaster has a single-coil routing in the bridge.

Looks like someone's getting the HSS Stratocaster!

That is unless they want to rout the body, buy the pickup, and buy the proper bridge to mount said pickup on...

Would guitar stores rout a guitar for him?

Thanks again![/b]

Instead of routing, consider a humbucker that will fit in the existing single coil rout and will attach to the stock Telecaster bridge as easily as the original pickup.

Here's one example, a Seymour Duncan Little '59, but there are a ton of them on the market.

Wouldn't placing a full sized humbucker in the bridge defeat the reason why most of us buy a Tele in the 1st place? No other guitar really produces that signature "twang". To each his/her own. Play On!

He's a bit of a noob when it comes to guitar; only been playing like 6 months.

He notices that he likes the tone of a humbucker, like the power and fat tone, but loves the feel of fender guitars. I suggested the HSS Stratocaster when he mentioned this but he quickly retorted that he'd prefered the feel of a Telecaster when he'd tried both.

Might as well get what you want, its one hell of an investment for someone in high school.

Can anyone direct me to a link that sells Tele-bridge sized humbuckers?

www.seymourduncan.com or www.dimarzio.com are good places to start.

I just put a set of the GFS lil punchers (http://store.guitarfetish.com/lilpuxlnewfi.html) in a Squier standard tele. I got the Xl p/ups which is what I'd suggest people do to insure full string coverage. I got the cool vintage for the neck because I heard it sounds more "tele" like than the modern (this is true - I had a modern vintage neck puncher and it seemed to be voiced pretty "dark" - or so was mine anyway). I matched the cool vintage with a modern vintage in the bridge for a little more growl. They balanced very well and I'm happy.

And yes . . . no routing required[/url]
