Hey All,
I recently bought a new Telecaster. I have wanted one my whole life. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to identify a made in Mexico Telecaster(aside from maybe a made in Mexico sticker, which I dont see) I suspect this one is made south of the border, and Im ok with that just want to know how to tell and maybe some input on what the difference is would be helpful...I notice that fender does not mention the Mexican tele on their site(at least not that i can see)They do point out the American telecasters.

A serial number and picture may help us to suss this out.

A hallmark of most MIM (made in Mexico) Teles is 21 frets, as opposed to the 22 frets they tend to put on MIA Teles. The MIM are usually the Classic series, Classic Players, RoadWorn, Vintage Hot Rod, Standard, and one of the Highway 1 models. Usually they give you a gig bag instead of a hardshell case. With the exception of the RoadWorns and Hwy 1, the bodies are finished in polyurethane or polyester finishes.

Yeah, we need pictures and/or a detailed description because there have been so many different MIM models over the years - vintage reissues, special models, etc. My first answer would be to check the front and back of the headstock, but I'm sure you have done so.

If it's a newer Tele and you're trying to match it up to current models listed here at fender.com, you can tell Mexican models by the country code of 13 or 013 at the beginning of the part number.

Example:

If you check out the serial-number, MIM guitars usually starts with M- and then the rest of the serial.

That's what I did and after the results I don't see a need to ever buy a MIA.

Yeah that's what I was hoping, but after picking up a couple of mexicans and then Americans, there is no comparison IMO. The Americans just play and feel better to me.

After all is said and done just go with what you think you would enjoy more. I know someone who owns both MIM and MIA and hardly touches the MIA. So all in all it's just pure opinion.
