I am looking at purchasing a 72 Telecaster Custom Reissue. I have seen that many of them are MIM. I have also seen some on ebay that are CIJ. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of Mexico versus Japan in terms of quality? The ones on ebay that are CIJ are brand new as are the ones that I am looking at that are MIM. I want the best bang for my buck. Thank you.

I'm a mexican fan myself, or at least I was back when I bought my strat and picked it out amongst others in the store. But right now the quality on both seems to be pretty good. Sometimes you might find a Mexi that's alot better than a $@! and vice versa. But since one can be better than others from time to time, but I guess it's best to just try them out and find one that performs better.

I was in the music store over the weekend looking at some tele's and although they didn't have any models that I'm looking for, I still played a few just for the hell of it. One thing I did notice, is that all the $@! made teles had smoother pots (they turned alot better) than the mexi's (which felt rough when turned, but that didn't have any effect on the sound though) and the $@! necks just felt better for some reason on most of'em. All this surprised the hell out of me. However they all looked and sounded great regardless of the things I noticed.

So after that, I guess I'm not quite as picky as I once was when it comes to the "Made in ___" label. But I will still "look for" and "pickup" a Mexi first though. It's a habit.

For me, the MIJ Tele Custom is nirvana.

The CIJ is nearly as good and I'd rank the MIM last.

The reason for this is primarily because the Japanese neck profiles are much nicer in my opinion compared to the MIM versions. 8)
