ok, so i bought a new telecaster a couple weeks back, the new 09 tele in sunburst, so pretty, but the guys at jacksonville guitar ordered it before the price raise, so i got it for 479 i believe, i love the tone, its so comforting with the satin feeling neck and i love the vintage style loge, however, being as im seventeen and my main influences are heavy metal bands, i want my baby to go metal, shes sexy :D , so pretty........sorry had to stop and stare at her again, anyways, im thinking about goin sd hot rails and adding in a coil splittin pot so i can get that single coil tone but i need to keep my options open so please!!! any suggestion???? if it helps at all i like august burns red, meshuggah, nice chug stuff like that. stuff that keeps me challenged in the speed area and technical stuff, dont get me wrong im not a die hard metal kid who refuses to listen to anything else, i love muddy waters, clapton, eric johnson, buddy guy, stevie ray vaughn, john mayer, and b.b. king, its just i have a strat for that and i just love my tele so much i want it to go metal at band practice and at the shows and still be able to split when im playin at church on wednesday night. thanks for any advice ! also it needs to be able to fit in a single coil space, i dont wanna cut my baby up

I'd say your on the right track with the hot rails. Check out DiMarzio too.

If your going to go Hot Rails you wont get any "Tele" tones from it, and wiring it for series/parallel will get a more realistic single coil sound than series/splits (while still being humbucking in parallel).

I'd suggest a SD Lil' '59 w/ a ser/par switch or a GFS Lil' Puncher. Those will bring the heavy and still come close to Tele tones in parallel. Or if you don't mind keeping a true single coil in there a SD Quarter Pound would also likely do the trick.

How about a pedal instead of new pickups?

One advantage of pedals vs. pickups is you can go to a store a try a bunch of pedals before you buy.

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't change pickups and I bet in time you will. But you might find a pedal is a quicker, cheaper, and easier solution.

I'll suggest a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. It's a great pedal for single-coil guitars and tube amps and it can make a Tele ROAR. It's adjustable, so you can dial in a little or a whole lot of gain. It does an amazing job making single-coils sound like humbuckers, in my opinion. I bet you could use it for metal and I know you'd like it for lightly overdriven bluesy stuff with a turn of the dial.

But then there's also all the "metal" pedals, like the Boss Metal Zone and about 500 other kinds. Those don't float my boat but might be just what you need to go from a church player to a metal monster with the same guitar and amp.

Have fun finding your sound.
