Of the guitarists that DON'T play a Fender Telecaster now, who would you like to see play one? As an example: Ronnie Earl. Another would be B.B. King, but I do have a photo of a young B.B. holding an Esquire in the wonderful book "Six Decades of the Fender Telecaster". It would have to be a classy model to go along with his classy blues.

Clapton has owned at least two of them (a '52 and a '67) although I don't think he played them much.

I know I've seen a video of Carlos with a tele. and he uses a strat on some of the instructional videos on his website.

Just to point out that Gary Moore owns and plays a 68 (I think) Tele, check out his "close as you get" album to hear it. Not just the Tele and his Les Paul but also some great work on a resonator.

Some of the best known guitarists have endorsement deals with the manufacturers. So they always play the guitars covered by the endorsement on stage. Eric Clapton is known to have a deal with Fender that requires him to play Stratocasters, although in his early days he played Gibson SG's a lot. Of course he can get his guitars set up any way he wants. An Eric Clapton model Stratocaster has a mid-boost active circuit that makes the guitar produce a more humbucker type sound, and serves as a better foundation for overdrive/distortion.

I believe B. B. King has an exclusive arrangement with Gibson.

Of course this deals don't cover studio work, so an artist can play whatever he wants when recording. I have read that B. B. King uses Telecasters a lot in the studio. A Telecaster in position 2 with the highs rolled off a little sounds very much like a Gibson to me.

EC at home in the '70s with a Tele and a Pignose.

I don't think Eric's deal with Fender precludes him from playing any guitar that he wants. One of the more recent times I saw him, he spent half the night on various Gibsons.

It might be interesting to see what some of the "shred" guitarists that rely on whammy bar tricks would do with a Tele in their hands. Eddie Van Halen? Steve Vai?

They would still be much better players than I am.

David Gilmour played a Tele on Paul McCartney's Run Devil Run CD and at the Cavern in 1999.
