Hey there,

I've had my 06 tele since, erm 06, but the neck pick up has always given me a lot of trouble. Two days after I got it, the neck pick up seemed to be failing a little. It would work from then on if I strummed the guitar really hard. At first the neck pick up would be really really quiet, but the strumming seemed to kick it into action. I brought it back to the shop I bougt it from and then all of a sudden it was working perfecly. Once I got it home again, however, the same thing started to happen. Now the neck pick up never works. I've ordered a new one - a 2009 USA Hot Tele neck pup, butbecause my guitar has a Fender60 badge on the back of the headstock I'm afraid of modding it too much if it's gonna take away from the guitar's value down the line. Also it's in a strange sort of finish that you don't see too often - natural ash with a 3-ply white pick guard. I'm disappointed in the guitar's neck pup, but I still love the instrument to bits. It plays like a dream, and the bridge pup is gorgeous. The only other problem that I've had with the guitar is the fact that the volume knob is quite loose compared to the tone, and always has been. I just think thatin a guitar worth over €1,000 the quality control should have been a bit better.

Anyways, my point is this:

Should I change out the pup or try to get it fixed? I did love the tone of the original pup but haven't heard it in so long that I almost forget what it sounds like. Also is this a 60th anniversary model, or would it have to have that written on the headstock and come with a special case?

Thanks,

gerardwayne

Hey Gerardwayne.

I would suggest that you have the solder joints or the selector switch checked before replacing the pickup.
It might be as simple as a bad solder joint on one of the pickup leads or a faulty or dusty switch. Do both pickups work when the switch is in the middle position? If so, it may be the switch, if not then it's probably the pickup or a bad solder joint. Someone knowledgeable or a good guitar tech from the place where you bought it from should be able to isolate it quickly and perhaps save you some money.

If you have been having this problem from the start I would go back to the shop I bought it from and have them check it out. The warranty may cover all parts and repairs.

Gerard,as far as the volume knob is concerned that should be very easy to fix.But I had the same thing happen with a Clapton strat I had bought after 3 years the bridge pickup just died.I had my friend who owns his own store do everything possible. When I first brought it in he said before even opening it up it was probably just a solder joint then a switch then he took it out and said it just died.I mean it was no problem to fix but I know how you feel about the guitar being 100% original it is a bummed out feeling.I just bought another Clapton Bridge pup and kept the old one.I was even thinking about sending it to Fender and seeing if I could get it rewound,I dont even know if they would do it but I still wanted the original pup.But then again considering the model a Clapton artist there are so many that in 20 years it would not of been worth an insane price I sold it for what it was worth and wound up getting a new one years later. As far as the sticker I am 90% sure that is just to celebrate Fenders 60th year and not that it is an aniversery model as I have a Strat ultra that has one of those stickers for the 30 or 35th year on back of the head stock. So the only thing I could say is see if Fender coud rewind the pup if it means that much or just replace it and play but I know where your coming from with the issue its a bummer.

My '06 Tele Has a 60th anniv. badge on the back of the headstock too. But it is NOT the 60th anniv. model. The 60th model has a diamond shaped decal that says 60th anniv.

Ahem,

Thanks to anyone who responded to this post. I haven't been back here in a while due to work commitments and a few serious drinking binges that have convinced me to give up both alcohol and cigarettes for the forseeable future. That's the only good thing that came out of the worst hangover in the history of the world, ever.

I don't think this a wiring or switch problem as I've wired a couple of guitars and the soldering joints look fine to me, and are spot on with any wiring diagram I've looked at. Also the sound doesn't change from the full bridge sound if I switch it to the middle position. If I put it to neck, however it just "dies." It's barely audible, and my tuner pedal can't even pick it up.

I hope to get back to the store where I bought it over the next few days - maybe tomorrow as I'm supposed to be at band rehearsals on Saturdays ;) If they can't get the pup running again, I'll get them to throw the new one in for me. I just hope it's not too much hotter than the original pup.

Alas, it looks like I might have to become one of those blasted "modders" afterall...

Again, thanks to everyone for their help. I'll post once more once I get the guitar running properly again.

Thanks a million,

Gerardwayne

P.S. For anyone who's interested in seeing my gorgeous tele, there are a few pics of it at

I still love that white on natural, and haven't seen it anywhere else...

I finally managed to get back over to the shop where I got my guitar yesterday. They were really helpful, and checked the guitar over for me. Their fender guy, who's there on tuesdays and thursdays, said it was a bit strange and couldn't figure out why the pup wasn't working. He confirmed that all the soldering was perfect and that the pick up must have something wrong with it. He suggested there was probably some small problem with the coil under the housing someplace. He gladly installed the 09 pup I bought on ebay, and did a great job of setting the guitar back up for me.

As it turns out, the new pup even though it was sold under the description of "official fender usa 09 hot alnico neck pick up," sounds the very same (as far as I can remember) and has the very same output as the stock pup. So, I was pleased to say the least.

I'm now looking forward to spending the rest of my life enjoying this wonderful and once again fully functional instrument.

Thanks to everyone who posted on this thread. Your help was much appreciated.

And thanks to the guys at Beat It Music, Blackrock, Co. Drogheda, Ireland who were very helpful and even let me play some of their lovely vintage fenders while they fixed my guitar.
