Now, now children let's not fight and insult others here.

Everyone has their own personal opinion on which is better. Some us can hear the difference, some us don't.

To me it is a bonding issue. The playability, the feel, the over all tonal quality of the guitar.
Up until recently I did not like Maple fretboards, then I found one I truly love.

If you want my honest opinion, I like both. Go try out a few a each and see what you think.

Tonal difference? Sorry, I don't hear it. Maybe if you're playing unplugged there is a discernable difference between the two woods (I'm still doubtful). But once the string vibration passes through your pickups, and effects, and amp, (lions and tigers and bears oh my) it's the electronics that you are hearing.

There is a discernible difference to me. And yes, the string vibration is everything...the maple and rosewood each transmute a different sound to the strings! Different string sounds get interpreted differently by the pickups and the rest of the signal chain. Therefore, the end sound will be different between maple and rosewood. It's like the difference between rubbers used for tires. You can have two similar tires, but one will handle better in all usable conditions while the other will get you there, but you'll feel and hear the difference as you go around corners and such and put some strain on those tires and you get worse gas mileage (been there). Likewise with the maple, it's just distinct sound difference I can hear.

And please read through my posts. I'm not trying to say that maple is better than rosewood and everybody must bow and accept that; I am saying *to me* the maple sounds better, plays better, and is more inspirational. So, when somebody asks for an opinion on the topic...that's my answer!

I'm new to the Fender forum. I know strangers are usually grilled, especially when their experiences are different than the norm. Once you folks get to know me, we will have a blast!!! I'm all about Fender and am in love with my tele. It was lust at first sight, but once I got to know her, HFS, she's mine -- we're hitched! Hopefully, you'll respect that and my opinions!

So, let's all be chill here! We have a common goal -- the tele. No sense spoiling that! Let's move Fender forward by sharing our own experiences with others as that's what people come to this forum for. They want to hear everybody's opinion, they certainly don't want to come here and read through a bunch of angry crud. I came here before I bought my tele. Cuz I quietly looked and learned, I was able to get the best tele I could afford and am damned glad I did. I'm just paying it forward. I'm just trying to help somebody else make their best purchase too!

tele-communication! :D

Welcome aboard RCB. No worries bro, I don't get "bent" if someone has a different opinion than I do. It's one of the cool things about groups of people.

That would make you tele-pathic.

There's a tele in everything -- even Spanish TV, tele-mundo.

Discernable differences are at best minimal as proven. Theres far better things to fight over than maple or rosewood. I say we all ought to unite against puppies. They are absolutely tone deadening, they keep chewing guitar leads.

Learn to love both, theres no real difference that a half decent amp cant sort out.

bass seems tighter on maple, rumor is many of the 60's players used maple because they emulated Buddy Holly. I like both. Pickups, nitro and capacitor probably make the most difference.

Part of how a maple or rosewood neck is perceived as sounding may possibly be psycho-acoustic. (If it's bigger - it plays louder, If it costs more it is better,. The appearance having more to do with the judgement of performance that it should.)

Some body colors just look better with a maple board - others with a rosewood board.

Chances are that if it looks better to you, it will seem to sound better.

Now that opens a whole new can of worms, eh?

ha. No. It's back to the same thing. The rosewood sounds different as does a maple body as opposed to an alder body as opposed to a mahogany body.

But, nice try!

The best way for *me* to describe what *I* am hearing is...air, the maple has an airiness about it. Sure, you can try and compensate with pickups and caps, but the wood determines how the string sounds when it vibrates. The rosewood is "darker" sounding to *me*. ...but, then agin', I can hear a cat crunching a bone out the other side of the house...while music's playing and people are ah jowlin'.

tele-graphing *my* toughts. Please do not think that I think my words are gospel. Just my opinions.

However, I must agree...black guitars sound best, sunburst next, then...wood, white guitars outside.

Ok guys I am going to jump into the fray...I like both...LOL...for rock and heavier stuff I like the Rosewood...to me...lol...it just feels righ and sounds right. For all the other music I play I am a fan of maple. I love my Tele's maple neck....it just sings for me. Do I think one is better than the other...nope...just like them for different applications....:)
