I was wondering if anyone here would know what a Butterscotch Fender USA 71' Tele in good condition is actually worth. I don't own it but my unemployed uncle who got it new in 71 had to pawn it to pay rent and only got $500 for it. He has two weeks to get it out or it goes up for sale. Is it worth enough for me to buy it if he doesn't get it back. I'm not too much of a Tele fan but i think it might be worth a lot more than what he got for hocking it. Then again a Tele could grow on me if its the right one.

If it's in good shape, it's definitely worth more than $500. A brand spanking new American Tele sells for almost $1500 these days; it follows that a nice '71 is worth close to double that. Moreover, since you have a personal attachment to the guitar you must factor that in as well. I'd say that you should do anything to get your hands on it.

Well my uncle has played alot of shows on it and he has been somewhat teaching me a few things here and there on his acoustic. I did check and see what they were going for on ebay and found one at $12,000.00 but i'm sure it's in better shape. I've always kinda wanted a tele but haven't found the right one. This might just be it. I'll be sure to post pics of it if i get it.

You're lucky that you know what the pawn shop paid. That will help you in negotiating the sale, IF the Tele ever makes it to his sales floor.

I suspect the pawn shop owner will either:

1. sell it on eBay

2. call his buddy and tell him what just came in the door. His friend is someone who buys almost every vintage MIA guitar that comes in and as such gets first choice of all the good stuff.

Of course, the friend is probably an eBay flipper too; that's why he buys so much gear from this pawn shop. He keeps the really good stuff for himself and makes a profit on all the rest.

That said, I wish you luck. I could very well be wrong and that Tele might show up on the sales floor the day after the pawn ticket expires. Bring cash, not a credit/debit card if you want to get your best deal.

Thanks for the advise. I haven't done much bussiness at pawn shops. I might just help my uncle get it back for himself. Who knows he might be generous enough to give it to me one day.

A 71 Tele in average condition is going to be worth probably about $2,500 on eBay.

I would strongly suggest that you help your uncle get it back ASAP...

+1

A guitar like that is most certainly worth $500, even if it's $500 you don't have.
