Hey all,

This is my first post though I have been doing lots of research on this forum for a little while - great to hear the thoughts of other guitar obsessives around the world!!

Thought I'd add a little fire to the Roadworn debate (I know, you LOVE 'em or HATE 'em..). Last week while just casually browsing my local guitar shop I happened upon a cheeky roadworn sunburst 50's tele. I picked her up, played around for all of about 42 seconds and instantly agreed to part ex my 3 month old '72 natural reissue thinline for it (which itself was an impulse buy - I tried sooo hard to love it believe me!). It felt like the guitar I'd been looking for for years, although it's faux identity did cross my mind - I would look COOL to the untrained eye, but would I feel a fraud when quizzed by an expert? I had to think about it. I decided I really didn't care, and by buying into a 'style' of guitar, whether it be a Rickenbacker (Lennon), Jag (Cobain) Gold Top (Slash) we all identify with someone else's image anyway - so why is identifying with a vintage image any less authentic? Answer - it isn't.

So I bought it - and am truly in love with it.

Just wanted to get some feedback on the decision, I bet some people will think I'm crazy, some will 'get it'.

I'm not trying to be something I'm not with this pre-battered guitar, I have lots of retro things, love Beatles more than anything modern and shiney and still think long hair rules.

Just thought I'd share my latest guiatr story!

:D

You dig it and its not doing anyone else any harm...well maybe to their ears because of all the rockin.

I have a 72 thinline and I love it, but if its not your thing, its not your thing and other people's opinions cant really change that.

To me, its just like buy jeans that already look warn in. Its just more aesthetically comfortable. The same can easily be applied to a guitar. Thats basically what the sunburst pattern emulates. Violins are finished with an antique patina... why people freak out about relic treatment of guitars is beyond me.

If you really like the guitar then why should someone else's opinion even matter?

Let it be  Congrats on the new axe

Welcome to the forum! +1 on the other comments. I recently finished doing a "light relic" finish to a Baja Tele. I love it and don't really care who doesn't! A relic finish, imho, is no different than a sunburst, a natural, or anything else. Taste is taste and it is entirely individual. As long as you're not trying to convince someone that what you own is a genuine antique, then do what you like. Different pickups, pickguards, amps, strings, etc. Shoot, if we all liked the same thing, wouldn't the guitar world (and life) be boring! Rock on!

It would be a boring world if we all liked the same style of guitar.

No matter what a guitar looks like, it always comes down to how it sounds and plays for me.

It sounds like you found a good one...congrats! 8)

Hey Bucklerock,

I personally would keep a '72 Thinline Tele as opposed to trading for a MIM, but then again I have 2 solid-body Teles, 1 Mexican Fender and 1 Korean Squier.

The only things about the Roadworn guitars that seriously put me off are the "relic'ing" and price. I don't mind beat(ing) up (my) guitars, but I think the owner should do it, just as you should rip your jeans yourself, not buy them ripped. The biggest put off about the relic look is how unrealisting the fret wear looks on the maple fingerboards. As for price, it's as much as a Highway 1 and close to the price of an American Standard, for a pre-beat up Mexican standard. Don't get me wrong, Mexican standards are great guitars, but the American ones are generally better comparing them stock.

All that said, if you think it looks cool, and more importantly if its got your ideal sounds and you bond with it better than the '72, I'd say you made a sane, logical choice. Opinions are like $@! holes, everyone's got one. As Zappa said, "There's no accounting for taste."

I haven't played one, but the Premier Guitar review of the Road Worn series defintely backs you up: they were underwhelmed with their STrat, but blown away with the Telecaster, saying "this Tele has it all!" They praised it as if they'd just been handed a real '52.

So I think, as others do, that if the guitar knocked you out, then you made the right choice, and Premier Guitar has your back.

Hey fellow Fenderistas,

Thanks for all the positive feedback, even though not everyone agrees with me - we all know it's horses for courses and all that!

Just wanted to say, 3 months later after the purchase of the roadworn, I'm still so in love with it. It seems to play better after every big sweaty session and has even improved my playing, which has really surprised me.

Hey, I'm no maestro, but it's really helped with my blues style and my body has seemed to connect so nicely with it. It also makes me want to practice more - even scales seem to sing (clearly I'm talking like a man in love...).

Anyone else fallen in love with a bit of wood and metal recently?

I was in my local place yesterday, and played a RI Thinline. I was very impressed to say the least. It's second hand with a fair few dings, I was extremely tempted though. With a bit of TLC it could be a fantastic guitar, unfortunately for me my GAS condition has to be kept in serious check for the time being. Enjoy the Roadworn Bucklerock, and welcome to the forums.
