Hello-

I am new to the forum and new to Fender. I just picked up a 2006 "60th Anniversary" Telecaster Standard (MIM). I noticed the 2006 has larger frets and quieter pickups (in terms of hum, not output) than the 2005.

My problem is this: when playing anything that requires the high E string, the high E string will slip off the neck! I noticed with the larger medium-jumbo frets that the edges are angled in much more than the smaller frets, so in addition to the string being very close to the edge, it easily hits the point on the fret that is angled, and thus, slips right off the fretboard while playing.

This is annoying. My question is: Has anyone else noticed this on the new Telecaster Standard or is this a manufacturing anomaly?

Thanks much,
Brad

Is this happening up and down the neck or on just a certain fret or two.

Sounds like you just happened across one that has poor frets. You should take it in and have somebody look at it . Also your nut could've been cut too far to the edge on that string. It could be a number things really.

I had a few other, more experienced players check it out, as well as the best custom guy in town and they all said the nut was cut too close to the edge, and the frets are too beveled, hence the easy drop off the fretboard.

I exchanged the guitar for a 2007 Highway One Telecaster with a rosewood neck, which I absolutely love. Still getting used to the feel of jumbo frets, which have revealed that I have too heavy of a touch with my left hand. Heavier strings should help as the 9s that came with it feel like razor sharp banjo strings!

The moral of the story . . . don't buy MIM guitars

Could be a poor fret job
Could be the neck isn't intalled exactly straight
Could be that you aren't pressing straight down on the fretboard

if the parts are made in America, how do we know the problem wasn't in the parts before they were assembled? Just saying, if the fret doesn't fit...

I too noticed that string #1 on practically all Telecasters, MIM and MIA is very close to the edge of the neck. My new Telecaster is the same way. It doesn't affect the playability though, not yet anyway.

It could be a problem that dates back to 1951 and is common on all fender guitars. The neck could be out of alignment with the bridge. Is the other E far from the edge, is there room to even the gap? If so loosen the strings, then loosen the neck screws, push the neck down or up (whichever sorts the problem) and tighten the neck screws once its sorted. The guitar may need a shim at the top of the neck pocket in really bad cases.
