When I've got nothing better to do, I enjoy looking around eBay for insanely expensive vintage guitars that I'll never be able to afford. This one, I must admit, had me thinking about buying some lottery tickets:

$32,000.00 for a "used" guitar ? :?

It's too bad that it was refinished.

It will be interesting to see if it sells at or near that price.

Probably a good barometer for the Vintage Guitar market and how it's being affected by the global financial crisis...

Seems cheap for a Broadcaster to me... 8)

I can't see global finances affecting vintage guitars. People who buy original Broadcasters at $32 large are not the people who worry about money, even if their businesses are somewhat down in profit.

As for this particular guitar appearing cheap, I would imagine a large chunk of change is knocked off by the refinish job. I'm not the sort of person who cares about stuff like that, but the whole vintage "mojo" seems to detest refinished guitars. I bet it sells for $30k.

I think you may be surprised about that. While undoubtedly some guys will not be affected by the downturn, quite a lot of baby boomer "high flyers" that were driving the vintage guitar mania were also people with large debts funding share portfolios and when the margin calls came, tangible assets such as guitars are the first to be sold, fire sale style.

Also their disappearance from the market will naturally reduce the demand and when demand is low and supply high, prices fall. 8)

This is true. I still think that $32,000 is insanely expensive. The parts on the damn thing aren't worth more than a few hundred bucks -- in fact, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a solid body guitar worth more than a thousand dollars in terms of parts and labour. Really, is it a better Telecaster than what they're making these days? Some might say yes, but I have my doubts. Though it's gorgeous, I don't think it's worth $32,000, or even half that.

It should not have been refinished. That alone substantially reduces the value as a collectable item.

At the great risk of opening the "vintage" debate again, I'm going to say "who cares." The guitar still looks wicked -- probably better than it did prior to the refinish. As much as "original" equates to "valuable," I still think the refinish is well done and looks great. Nothing wrong with that guitar in my opinion.

If I were filthy rich, I'd consider that type of investment. But, generally speaking, $35,000.00 for a tele??? Holy freaking dudey. I just got the best tele I could imagine for...$399.00, including shipping, gig bag, strap, cord.

For sure, I'd like to sit down with one of those vintage teles and do a side by side with my new MIM and see what flies.

Who's done that lately? What was your impressions?

Even though it's a refinish....it's still the holy grail of Fender Sold body guitars (it ain't a Tele, by definition  ).

That alone justifies a high price due to the rarity.

If I was really honest about my collecting, a Broadcaster is the No. 1 Target to buy.

But even I struggle to justify spending $35K on a guitar.... :(

I wish. Being a destitute student (think Raskolnikov) my gear budget is insignificant. I spend my days surfing the internet and lusting over guitars like that Broadcaster. Do you think a guitar like that would, if measured not by its age or desirability, but playability, match up to the newest, best American Deluxe?
