I'm near the point of buying my first Tele. It's come down to a choice between an American Standard or an American Deluxe. Looking for opinions as to whether or not the differences between the two are worth the extra money for the Deluxe. Does the S-1 make a significant difference? Haven't been able to find a guitar shop with both models in stock to compare. Thanks for the help.

When I bought mine, I was faced with the same question.. After numerous trips to GC the deluxe won... It wasn't the price or the S1 switching or really any of the differences. It just plain felt good to play.

I think either way, whatever you choose will be right for you 8)

There are some pretty big differences between them, like s-1 switching system, SCN pickups, contoured body, don't forget the heel contour...and some cosmetic stuff like abalone inlay vs. plain dots, binding on the body, and a different selection of finishes to choose from.

That said, I went to buy a Dlx, and came home with a AM Std. I just liked the way the standard felt, to me it was better than the Dlx models that were on display. I can't pick out any one thing that really influenced my decision, it was more of a feel/sound thing. The Dlx models are great, I may yet pick one up, but for now my AM Std keeps me plenty satisfied.

For your FIRST Tele, I would suggest the AM STD. Why?

Because they are great playing, traditional style Teles and for a first Tele, that's probably a good thing.

The Deluxes are absolutely beautiful and would make a good subsequent purchase... :D

Same story. I was expecting to get a Highway 1 and walked out with a deluxe. It just felt so much better to me.[/i]

Thanks, all. After weighing comments and budget, I'm going to order an American Standard, Crimson Red Transparent, with Maple fretboard. I'm officially excited!!!! :D

Took delivery on my first Tele today. American Standard, Crimson Red Transparent, maple neck. Took it home, tuned it, and played 'til my fingers were sore!!! In a minute I'm going for round 2. :D

Thanks again for the advice.
