Has this been asked before? Can't bend past one semitone on high frets, eg 14 or 15, particularly affects B and G strings, the note breaks off into a little squeak, as if a fret higher up is not level and blocks the string. I'm placing this question on behalf of a friend, and he says he knows someone else with a standard tele that does the same. Effectively, it's unplayable in that range. Any ideas?

It's called "fretting out," and it can be caused by several things: trying to run too low an action on a 7.25" radius board is commonly cited, but it's more likely just a high fret (I know too many guys who play vintage radius guitars and say their guitars never fret out.)

Have the guitar set-up, including a fret leveling, by a good tech and it'll go away.

HI, Slapchop may be right. When I bought my Deluxe Tele, I lowered the action, I didn't get exactly what you have described, but I was unable to bend without severe buzzing. Raised the action up all problems were solved.
Hope this helps

Bill

+1 Have the guitar checked out by a Tech.

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad to say my tele never had any such problems (a 72 Thinline RI) but it's a shame that you can buy a new guitar from a brand as reputable as Fender only to discover it's not been made properly! I'll pass on your advice.

PS Sorry about the typo in the title!

Tom,it is not that it is no made proper as this is a very common thing and has happened on many guitars of mine .Chances are you can go and have this solved without having to leave your guitar in the shop over night.Sometimes I pull out a guitar I have not played in quite a while and theres a problem that was not there when I put it away. Now if you bought a new guitar and had electronic problems or sometimes on an expensive guitar the frets are sharp and protrude a bit on the sides thats bad craftsmanship./KEEP ON ROCKIN

Straycat is right The problem isn't from Fender. The competition to sell guitars against online outlets has changed the way you get a guitar. My first guitar purchased from a music store had been set up and had good strings on it before it ever went on display. Now you lucky if the thing is even close to being in tune. It's kinda like the old saying you get what you pay for except now you have to pay extra for it.

The MIM tele I got came out of the box with the "fretting out" problem. It was on the high "e" string from the 15th fret up. I took a look at the frets and such, discovered the string saddle was a hair too low. I raised the string saddle until the problem disappeared. The fretting out went away when the string height hit 1.5 mm, 1/16th of an inch which is low action. Either the saddle jiggled down during shipping or they adjusted that saddle a little low at the factory. At first, I didn't want to touch it thinking it might be a raised fret or some other problem I'm not experienced enough to fix yet. But, then I figured, if I can get the problem to go away with basic adjustments, what they hey. Immediate satisfaction, fret out gone with a simple saddle height adjustment!

Speaking about getting guitar store guitars, Now I always bring a clamp on tuner because most of the guitars I end up playing are out of tune from dead strings. The weather has a lot to due with the shape of the neck. you might have a slight warping on that side of the neck. some adjustments work, while others won't. Bring it to a tech and have him give it a once over. It may be an easy fix.
