I am going to possibly be trading my SG for an original telecaster deluxe soon. The only thing I was a little worried about was if I would be able to properly identify an original. The owner claims the guitar was made in 1972. Can anyone tell me any key characteristics to look for in the guitar that seperate it from the various reissues? The owner claims that the guitar has been professionally refinished.

Buy a copy of the Telecaster "Bible".

I don't know if you can still find it in bookstores, but you can order it from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Telecaster ... 793508606#

The information and detailed photos in that book will help you make a reasonably educated decision.

Cool link, I'll definitely look into picking it up once I get the guitar, but I may be meeting to make the trade sometime soon. I've never owned a fender, but the SG has a serial number on the back of the headstock that tells you when the guitar was made. Does fender have a serial system like that as well, and where would the serial number on a telecaster deluxe be located?

Did you get a chance to look at this guitar yet?

I meant to look in that book and get some info for you but my young kids keep me so busy when I'm home I have a hard time finding any free time for such things.

Hopefully this weekend I can look up some info for you, if you still need it.

You might try www.tdpri.com also.

Without looking up this model, it will be on the back or front of the headstock. And yes, you can look it up at the link below.

You can use the S/N on the guitar to date it, assuming that you don't have a clever fake. So I'd also suggest the book ... there are many signs you can look for to back up the S/N!
