I have been modding guitars for a hundred years(seems like it) But I never really paid alot of attention to some things. I would go with what looked good sounded good, recommended, whatever. Well I am putting together a tele now and my question is. What is the difference and what should I go with as pertains to. 250 K pots or 500K pots?
Thanks

All that matters is the pots are of the Highest quality. Look here for the answer: See Mike Oceans web link:

The conventional wisdom is that 250K pots are best for single coil pickups and 500K pots are best for humbuckers. The sound spectrum of single coil pickups is dominated by higher harmonics. Humbuckers have a flatter response that is said to sound "fat." Typically, you don't want to lose the higher harmonics when you're using humbuckers, so the stronger pot is used. Single coils can afford to lose a little more of the high end, so the weaker pot is used.

That being said, there are no rules.

The difference between 250k and 500k is there, but I don't think its that noticeable, unless I am looking to hear a difference. Does that make sense? What really makes a difference to me, is not the pot value, but the type of pot. I prefer Audio Tapers for volume or tone, but Linear Tapers only for tone, because if used as a volume, you hit max volume 1/3 of the way through the knob turn, and it stays that way until the last 1/10 or so of the knobs rotation, when you get a slight boost....I prefer 10 to be the loudest instead of 3, so I use Audio Tapers for volume, though some places on the net say opposite of what I say, let your ears do a test...

You'll mainly see 250s on Teles, so if you like how a standard tele sounds, go with 250. Good luck.
