Ok, just got these SCN pups for my 1966 Tele. I've got a question about the bridge pickup ground wiring. See below.

Image

The wire on the right comes from the pickup to the piece of metal (which I know goes between the pup and bridge plate) and the wire on the far left goes to the control plate, but, what about the other small wire in the middle? It's not long enough to go to the control plate, so what is its purpose? Thanks!

I don't know about SCN pickups specifically, but some other Fender pickups come with that ring soldered to one of the wires. I've used one (from a '50s Classic Esquire) in a Tele and here's what I did:

Take one of the pickup mounting screws and push it through its hole in the bridge plate. Now slide that ring up the screw so it's against the bridge plate.

Now slide your spring or tubing over the screw so you're squashing that ring up against the bottom of the bridge plate. Now screw the pickup on (all three screws).

I like to run the ground wire to the back of the volume pot, but if your ground wire isn't long enough for that and you don't want to lengthen it, just strip off the end of the ground wire (it's already started for you), and place it under the bridge plate, between the plate and the body. You might want to mash the wire flat with pliers first, so the bridge plate sits flat on the body.

Install bridge plate and you're done, IF you can get the plate flat on the body. I usually can't with a wire under there, and that's why I run the ground to the back of the volume pot.

Again, that's how I did it with a MIM '50s Classic pickup. I assume the SCN is similar but I could be wrong.

My Deluxe Tele w/SCNs had the metal lug grounded to the body in the bridge pickup cavity, the short wire sandwiched between the bridge plate and top of the body, and the remaining wire was soldered to the back of one of the pots. Since you've got it apart, it might be a good idea to shield the cavities with copper tape to make sure all of the grounds are solid.

There is a wiring diagram on the support section of this site. Look for the American Telecaster Deluxe, hit the second yes button and that should be how to wire your telecaster. congrats, I have the SCN pups on my lite ash tele. It's a great tone machine.

the piece of metal get's screwed into the body under the bridge pup and the middle wire goes up and grounds the bridge plate.
