Hey All,

My first post here. Thanks for having me.

I have a question about the Fender Thinline Tele. I was told that Fender did a "special run" in 2002 of this model and that only about 200 were produced. I was wondering if there was any truth to that story and, if so, how would one be able to identify that guitar?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Fender USA did make a special run of 1972 Thinlines, around the time you mention. I don't know if they made 1969 Thinlines or not.

The 72 reissues go for quite a bit of money - about 2/3 the price of an original 70s Thinline.

I have what the seller claimed to be one of 500 '69 reissue Thinlines -- this one in Lake Placid Blue. His claim was that they (so he was told) made 500 each in, so he thought, 5 different colors. He was selling a pink one as well as the one I got.

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer to how many were made (but I haven't written to Fender customer service either). Mine does check out as a 2002 by the S/N and since I know there was also a pink one (and I've seen a Kelly green or such), I'd guess they made more than 200 total.

You're referring to a guy with an eBay listing for 5 Thinlines in each of the different colors? If so, I saw that listing and that got me to researching this Tele. I hope there's someone out there that can shed some light on this mystery. I'd love to know more about them.

I'm guessing that the '72's made in 2002 had Humbuckers where the '69 RI's had single coils. Are yours single coils, philip?

Yep, the LPB 69 has single coils, as did the pink one he was selling. It's possible that he had more too but I only saw the two.

As far as I know, all 72 reissues would have humbuckers, though the 72 I have is a CIJ model, not from 2002. However, that did replace an MIM 72 (also humbuckers) that was a 2002 model. Based only on the price I paid for the 02 72 reissue (around $400), I'm not sure if they were rare but if so, I got one heck of a deal.

Well, here's what they're selling at MF:

Nice looking axes but black is the only solid color. Wonder if these are the some guitars otherwise.

Anybody else want to chime in here? I'm still not sure we know if there was actually a 2002 limited run of these Thinlines.

Yeah, I know. Problem is, he's the only one so far who's making the unsubstantiated claim. He even says that he can't confirm the information that he posted in his ad. That's why I was hoping someone else might be able to shed some light on this.

If I can find some time later, I'll se if I can contact Fender and get a definitive answer.

Alright, I just got off the phone with Steve Daniel at Fender customer relations and here's what he told me about the Fender MIM Telecaster Thinline guitar produced in 2002.

There were, in fact, a very limited number of these guitars produced in 6 different colors in quantities of 15 of each color which obviously makes them rare indeed.

Mine's Candy Apple Red. I told him that I'd seen one in pink but he said the pink ones was part of a different "special run" in which 55 were manufactured.

Glad to have had the opportunity to get the info straight from the horses mouth. What else does anybody know about these that they'd like to contribute?

Also, I've kind of set up an email dialogue with Steve and would gladly forward any questions that other forum members may have about this specific model Fender Thinline the next time I'm in contact with him.

Well, thanks to Texas_Flood_Lenny (and I truely mean it), seems the value of my 5 guys might have just increased?!?! Thank you Lenny for contacting Fender. I never did it because I didn't think they would release production numbers.

My unsubstantiated numbers came from very knowledgeable members on TDPRI. One member in fact used to have the collection of the 5 CAR colors too.

15 seems low, but if Fender says so, then I'm going with it. Also, I wonder what the 6th color is? That would be my question to Steve.

After my ebay listing ended, I decided to keep them. Glad I did for a number of reasons.

Lenny, thanks again

The link to other info on the 69 and 72 MIM 2002 reissues. I have a 72 CAR.

It is nice to see a rebirth of interest in the CAR series.

Thanks for finding that link.

The poster in that thread with the collection, does not have them anymore. He has sold them all, I believe. There is another poster, also in that thread, who at the time had one. He has since collected all 5 and then also sold a few, if not all of them. I have corresponded with both on multiple occasions regarding these Thinlines.
