Help, please?
I'm looking to buy a used Telecaster and want to do some research on it but I don't know which type it is.

It's got an F-hole, 1 pickup in the neck position (solid black, not a P90, no pole pieces, nor lipstick cover), no pickup selector switch (obviously) but 3 knobs. It's not a Telecoustic. There's no soundhole......only the F-hole. The headstock just says Fender Telecaster, and it was made in Japan. Oh....no pickguard, and it's sunburst with cream binding, and black sides and back.

Any idea what it is? Or feedback on it if you know about it? :?:

So it doesn't have a bridge pickup?!?

I was gonna say it sounds like a Thinline (reissue) but then if there's no bridge pickup... Hmm...

That's right. No bridge pickup....just a black single-coil at the neck. I thought maybe it was a really deluxe version of the Telecoustic but there's no sound hole, just the F-hole, and the neck and body are very deluxe compared with the Telecoustic.

So does it have like a strat style bridge or the usual tele tray style bridge? Got any pics? I'm totally intrigued over this one.

I'm also curious to see this enigma of a tele. Post a picture and I'm sure the obsessive tele geniuses around here can help you out.

Sounds like a mid-'90s "Telecaster Acoustic-Electric". I almost bought one when they were new and in guitar stores. I'd still like to get one someday.

See the bottom left Tele below:

Yeah, they were very cool. I loved them when they came out but could never raise the extra cash to buy one. Then, like so many unusual Fender models, they were discontinued -- and this was before eBay so if you didn't find one in a local shop or in the Daddy's Junky Music catalog, you were out of luck.

Fender has something similar now, but I haven't seen one in a store yet to try.

I'd still much prefer the '90s MIJ version since it has the same body thickness as a regular Telecaster and the knobs are in (almost) the right place, rather than stuck up on top of the body where they're harder to reach.

I'm a big fan of the Telecaster neck pickup sound and having that and a decent acoustic sound on the same guitar is very appealing. What I don't know about the current model and can't remember about the '90s MIJ one is if the acoustic sound is any good. I do remember loving the neck pickup sound on that '90s MIJ, though - it was the main reason I wanted one so badly at the time - that, and the overall "coolness" of the guitar.

That's a fine looking guitar. Kinda like it better with the F-Hole than the (current) sound hole in the middle.

Wow. You guys are amazing. That's it! It's the Telecaster Acoustic-Electric. Only difference is, it has cream binding on the front.

I wanted to pick up a Telecoustic just for an alternate acoustic sound for recording, and called most of the Guitar Centers in northern CA trying to find one in stock. I've got 4 or 5 other "normal" Tele's but wanted something that sounds a little different. As fate would have it I found a store where they "just got a used one in" so I drove to see it, and it's actually the Telecaster Acoustic-Electric. Not the Telecoustic. It plays SO NICE and sounds fantastic. Someone had just evidently traded it in. I paid $500 for it but can't pick it up until it clears the "not stolen" period. I have no idea if I over/underpaid for it, but in my opinion it plays/sounds so great, money is merely what I paid for a fantastic playing guitar.

Once I get it home I'll let you know how it records, also. Thanks again. You're awesome.

Yep, that's what it is....

It has a piezo pickup in the bridge and one of the knobs "blends" the neck pickup and bridge pickup.

There is, of course a MIJ Telecoustic, which is much better than the recent fibreglass backed MIC versions.

These are not easy to find however.

I'm anxious to do some recording with the Tele Acoustic-Electric as soon as I pick it up next week. Having the "cobine" option ought to get some great sound. I'll post the results if I can figure out how. Or I'll put it on my MySpace page. Robert Sisemore & the Gainfully Employed.
Almost all my guitar work is Telecasters.

So what Telecasters do you guys use the most?

My custom partscaster 62RI with SCN pups, 4 way mod and phase switch with cbs style strat headstock on a custom warmoth neck (ebony with abalone inlay 22 fret graphite nut with compound radius and skunk stripe). It's my dream guitar.

I think that's a good price. If memory serves, those sold for around US$400 - $450 when new.

I'd love to find one at that price. My primary interest, as an at-home player only these days, is looping. I'd love to be able to loop an acoustic guitar sound and then solo over it with a neck pickup Tele tone without having to switch guitars.

I bet you'll find it even more versatile on stage. Let us know how you like it when you can pick it up.
