Hello to all! Currently the recession has put a huge damper on my gear budget. I would really love to get a Tele to complement my Strat. However, the American Standard is just plain out of my reach. Among the less costly Teles (imports), which come closest to providing a great genuine Tele sound? Any thoughts or suggestions on this, please?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome to the forum ! :) I think you could go 3 ways
1. Baja Tele-I've heard good things about this one
2.A new MIM--They are also well made
3. Buy a used but in great shape (a lot of deals because of economy) MIA Tele.
Good luck in what ever you decide!!

I forgot a real MIA that is less money than the American Standard Tele and that is The Highway One Tele. In fact I may look at this one first, but check them all out before buying!

You may want to seriously consider some Squier Teles...great bang for the buck.

I've got a MIM standard, and it's a great guitar. They're well built and definitely have the classic Tele tone. It's an excellent instrument, and I'd recommend it to anyone!

Thanks to all for your suggestions! :) This gives me an opportunity to try some things out. I would never have considered a Squier without the post. I always was a bit concerned about the quality of these guitars.

I just bought a new Tele Highway One Upgrade in honey blonde/maple neck. I love this guitar. It's MIA, thin nitro satin finish, hot tele pickups. They have gone up in price for 2009 (about $150). For a quality USA made telecaster for about $899, you can't beat it. I was lucky, I bought mine back in Feb and paid 2008 rates. :D I also have a 2007 Eric Johnson 2 tone sunburst Strat. Can't think of a better guitar combo to have. :D :D

I picked up a used 2007 AmStd Tele for $600 in the fall. No flaws, no blemishes. Look for used.

I hear nothing but great things about the Squier Classic Vibes series Teles, though the Standard and Vintage modifieds are great from my experiences as well....

This is true, but you must be careful when buying a Squier. In my own experience, there are some excellent Squier guitars out there, and there are just as many lemons. Take your time and test each one, and you'll most likely walk away with a wonderful instrument.

I would suggest a Baja Tele, but they are pricey since the price increase. I have read about the Classic Vibe Squier Tele, and it also creates zealots over its sound, similar to the Baja zealots.
