Hi All:

I recently picked-up a new '08 Standard MIM Telecaster as a back-up to my Deluxe Fat Strat.

First off, let me say that I am completely blown-away by the overall quality of this instrument! The neck is incredibly fast, the factory-set action is professionally low, the hardware is very high quality, and the finish on the body (chrome red) is stunning. What a great value! (Thank you Fender).

Even though the pick-ups on the guitar seem quite satisfactory for now (I play through a Line 6 Spider III 75), after I get the Tele broken-in some, I might want to upgrade the pick-ups. Here are the basics:

* I play predominantly blues and classic rock.
* I'd prefer to stay with passive Pick-ups
* I'd like to buy the pick-ups in a set, and I'd like to maintain the guitar's current look (open coils on the bridge PUP & chrome-plated covered PUP on the neck).

I'm open to all brands that sell Tele sets at a reasonable price (say $180 or less), such as Seymour Duncan, EMG, and, of course, Fender.

I'd love to her what brands & PUPs have worked well for other Tele players.

Thanks;
Ed

I have the same guitar in the burst color. I put a set of Fender Texas Specials in it and it made a huge difference. I'm very happy with them. (I play the same kind of music) I would definately make the same choice again. Good Luck!

I like the stock pups...what is it that you don't like about them?

Have you tried adjusting the height?

Hi Mike;

Here's the funny thing...I picked-up this Tele with the idea that it would kinda be an experimental project for me. I envisioned changing out the pick-ups, the tuners, etc.

However, I have to admit that I REALLY like this guitar in its stock configuration.

To answer your question, I'd have to say that there is NOTHING I don't like about the stock pick-ups. If forced to choose something, I'd say that the sustain is a little lacking.

On the other hand, I particularly like the tone produced in the middle switch position (bridge & neck pups). I love the 'darkness' of the tone here - It's perfect for vintage electric blues (John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, etc.), as well as for overdriven alternative stuff.

I guess I'm just curious whether I could improve on this already awesome ax!

BTW, I forgot to mention, the Tele has a maple fingerboard (I always take this feature for granted with Telecasters :-)

Thanks to all for the suggestions so far.

I had a set of Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups installed in my 2005 MIM Standard Tele and they're fantastic. My main complaint with the stock pickups was that they were noisy, particularly when I added overdrive. The SCNs killed the noise and the hum and they sparkle with classic Telecaster tones.

I'm a Tele addict now and my collection has grown since I bought that first 2005 MIM Standard. I have an '07 Classic Player Baja, an '08 '72 Thinline Reissue and an '08 American Standard but my SCN/MIM Standard is always at the top of the stack. The Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups are that good.

I also swapped the tuners to Fender Vintage to complete the upgrade... unless I decide to add a 4 way switch. Hmmm. :wink:
