 So - I have an '82 Vintage Tele that plays great - but I wasn't happy with the original pick-ups. The middle position was very honky (lots of mid-range) and the lead position squealed like a pig. A friend of mine loaned me a reissue custom-shop Nocaster. The pickups sounded GREAT on that so I bought a set of custom-shop Nocaster pick-ups and had them installed in my Tele. The squeal is gone and the lead pick-up sounds great - but the rhythm pick-up volume is considerably lower and I'm still getting that mid-range honk in the middle position. ANY IDEAS ??

by the way - my other primary axe is a 62 re-issue custom tele (built in 2000) and that guitar has no mid-range issue.

The honkiness might be due to the cap value...maybe try experimenting with those, and/or maybe different pot values. As far as rhythm pickup volume issues, have you tried raising the neck pickup height?

Welcome to the Forum.

What pickups are in the '62RI? What is the cap value in the '62?

Thanks for the reply guys (I'm new to the forum)

I'm going to try raising the neck pick-up when I get home tonight to see if that helps with the volume. I'll also take a look at the cap value and compare that with what's in the custom tele and the nocaster.

thanx to everyone who replied with help. I spoke with one of the techs at Fender and he told me that the Nocaster pick-ups are designed that way. Many people suggested adjusting the height of the neck pick-up which I did and is actually helping with the situation. I'm still playing around with it - but I think I've got it licked.

Sometimes there is a break in period when you change any aspect of a guitar, especially the pickups. You are doing the right thing by making minor adjustments and learning the different nuances of the pups. I am sure you will be teaking your Tele till you have tuned into the tone you want. You know a lot of people fall into the trap of I liked the way that sounded and modify their guitars or amps. When it doesn't quite live up to your expectations you search for answers. With guitars a lot of the sounds or tone are respective of the age of the pickups, electronics and wood the guitar. A pick up that is 5 years old will sound different than a new set of the same pickups in the same guitar. You hear aobut how some people want that tone only a pre 60's tele or strat can produce. Part of that is the fact that the pickups have had 40 or so years of play and aren't brand spanking new. I always say, you have to find your own tone and that is a culmination of a combination of many factors. Good luck and keep us posted.
