Do you think players such as Jim Root and John Five (wonderful players) really play teles when they add EMGs, locking tuners, super thin necks, low profile bridges and beveled bodies? :o

This'll open a can of worms.

All depends what you think makes it a Telecaster. Is it the bodyshape that defines it? Is it the pickups? The electronics? Or all of them combined? Along those lines you could just about say that a "Deluxe" tele isn't really a Tele because it it has humbuckers.

Is a Strat with humbuckers and a Floyd Rose trem still a Strat?

Or are these modifications and changes just part of the evolution of the guitar?

I would suggest that the beauty of a Telecaster lies in its constituent parts. The body, electronics, bridge, and even the look of the headstock all contribute to making a proper Telecaster. The only exceptions in my eyes are Thinlines, Customs and Deluxes which have all been around since the late 1960s and have developed their own history as Telecasters.

Yes it's a Tele, just not a "traditional" tele. Fender desingend those guitars for those artists.
