Hey gang! I just got my first Tele a coupel weeks ago and I love it! It is an absolute beauty! Its a Highway One Texas in blonde. I play ithrough my Blues Jr. (yes I am a bit of a Fender guy!).

However, as much as I play it I can't help but feel like its missing what made me love my first guitar... a Standard Strat (which I got 2 years ago). Now I am feeling like a parent who isafraid to play favoites... but itching to upgrade my Strat to an American model.

Anyone else have any ideas on what makes the Tele and Strat feel different? Any advice on how to make the Tele do what its built to?

(PS - I play surf and post punk ala Pixies, GBV, and Misson of Burma)

What makes strat and tele "feel" different? Umm. Body shape for a start. Then pickups, electronic circuit etc.

What do you want your Tele to do which it isn't doing? In the end they are both uniquely different guitars; you can't really expect a tele to sound and play like a strat and vice versa. It'd be like saying "I wish my Rickenbacker sounded more like my Les Paul".

My first electric was a standard strat and I loved it. I always kind of lusted after a tele. I sold my strat and bought a tele. Now while I absolutely love my tele, I also miss the sounds and feel of my strat. So the only answer is to also get another strat and be happy with them both, and their respective unique feel and sounds.

Cheers.

I think the poster above confirmed whatI didn't want to admit... time to save for a better Strat and have one of each. No disrespect to the Tele, its a peach.

I've been a strat man all my playing days but I just bought a new tele a couple weeks ago and can't put it down. It has quite a different feel and tone . I'm still a dyed in the wool strat man though. Both are great guitars and if you can own both! :)

Two Words: Nashville Telecaster. Tele shape, strat-like pickup config...

Hard Choice.....
I had my beloved MIM strat first and then got a Tele. It's quite interesting how 2 guitars that have almost Identical necks can feel and play so differently. After I first got the Tele, I would have to case it up and hide it in order to play any of my other guitars including the Strat. It seems that I can play everything 'cleaner' on the Tele.....

Now, when I'm about to jam, I don't know which guitar to take!!! Seems to be mood dependant, but if I know another player has a strat, I'll bring the Tele and vice versa. When I play rhythm with my Jazz friends, I like the Tele because I can comp chords a lot cleaner and that Tele 'bite' allows me to cut through the mix a little better.

I like to think of them in terms of coffee. The Tele is your typical cup of black coffee - Hot, brisk with a nice bite. The Strat has a dash of sugar and some cream - A little bite and a tad more smooth around the edges.....

The strat and the tele definitely have their own unique feel and sound. I absolutely love my new American Standard Tele, but it's a very different type of instrument from my MIM strat (which I also enjoy very much).

If you can afford it, I would say go for the new strat -- especially if you're into surf rock.

If you're worried about the cost of another new instrument, perhaps there are some upgrades you could do on your old strat to bring it more in line with where you want it to be...
