Not very, I'm sure you all will say.

I am looking for a little more bite from my stock 52 pickups. I am looking for that smooth Robben Ford Telecaster sound. I don't like to use much overdrive and feel that the stock pups aren't putting out enough.
First off is this correct? Are these low output pickups? And second any ideas of what I should change them to? I still want it to sound like a Telecaster though and not a humbucker guitar.

You help will be much appreciated...

Most any reissue guitar is going to have what they consider "vintage style" pickups, which does mean that they wouldn't be very hot. If you like the tone of the guitar but just want a meatier sound, you can try just swapping out the 250k pots for 500k. Sometimes just changing the volume is enough while keeping the 250k for the tone.

For more output put in a set of Fender Texas Specials.
But first try to put them closer to the strings.
My '52 is has these measurements: both pickups 2mm on the low
and high E-strings when strings depressed at the last(21)fret.
A 500K pot will brighten your sound more, not give you more output.

"brighter".... "more bite"..... you say tomato...

There are a number of different tone capacitors to play around with also. Personally, if I was going to rewire the whole thing, I think I'd try a $5 pot change, or $1 cap, before dropping the cash on new pickups. Hopefully that height adjustment will be all you need though... good call "lost". The stock setup in the '52s sounds great. The only thing I changed on mine was to go with the modern switching, but I'm thinking lately that even that was unnecessary.

Mine is the ""spruce top" listed below. Same specs as the '52, but with a chambered ash body, topped with a solid slab of spruce.

Let us know how it works out for you "bluz"

I like the pickups in my'52 also, they have more output then vintage
Stratocaster pickups, and Stevie Ray sounded huge.
Play with the tone controls on your (tube)amp to get the sound you want.
A good overdrive pedal like a Tube Screamer will fatten the sound also.
